Vale Gerald Sargent, a Queensland Astrofest regular
Hi everyone,
This is a bit late, but Gerald Sargent passed away on the 22nd April just a few weeks short of his 92nd birthday. Gerald hasn't been able to attend the Queensland Astrofest for several years, but many regulars will remember him setting up between the volleyball court and the path through the Imaging Field.
I have many memories of Gerald, the myriad of equipment, and even more cables draping from his mount. Gerald lead a long and interesting life,, filled with travel, and other diverse interests such as archaeology and radio communication. I don't pretend to know him well or know him outside his interest in astronomy.
My understanding is that he was a member of the Astronomical Association of Queensland. I was wondering if anyone would be able to share any memories of Gerald in this thread, and perhaps a photo or 2.
His family is holding a small private memorial service on Thursday 6th May. If anyone has something to say for his family, I will be happy to pass it on.
Another wonderful part of the universe, I was pleased to have met Gerald at astrofest. A true character who gave advice and soldering tips. He had everything in the hutch, including a supernova sun which lit the field. I hope you shine on Gerald, I was privileged to have met you .
A true gentleman. Gerald had almost as much equipment as Houghy, and always open to helping those around him who needed help, or to borrow a forgotten item.
We have missed him over the past years when he was too frail to attend, and now it is sad that he and never attend again. I was lucky enough to catch up with him in September 2019, just before he and his wife moved from the family home to a retirement village.
We will remember him.

I met Gerald a few years back when I bought some second hand bits from him. He was firm in his opinions, but I’m ultimately grateful for him nudging me to purchase an Astro-Physics mount.
Great to see an older chap getting stuck into technology as well.
Sad News I bought some cameras from him many years back and had a decent chat with him in his home , his den was full of books from what i remember .. a life well lived .. sincere best wishes to his family through these hard times.
