Mars from last year

I've been reading that book 'Planetary Astronomy' and discovering how I've been doing everything all wrong.(!)

Case in point, the telescope I've been using (RC10) probably isn't the best for planetary on account of its large central obstruction.

But the pages on processing did make me dig out some old data to play with.

Mars from October 28 last year. Not great conditions, as far as I can tell. Image scale was probably a bit high. I used an ES 3x barlow (a glaring omission from the Televue powermate range, IMO) and the image scale was around 0.1"/pixel (I think!).

It looks like it would almost make a good picture, but for the double line on the right hand limb. Anyone know how to fix this in Autostakkert?

It seems to be in all channels, so maybe I'm putting it down to a colimation issue from the night.

Also, can anyone please tell me a good program for identifying Mars features? I mean, I can just zoom all the way in with Cartes Du Ciel, but I don't get names. The google Mars site doesn't seem to have an overlay that looks anything like what I'm seeing in my telescope.

Best,

Markus

Hi Markus

It seems your learning, so keep up with the research.

I have never succeeded with planetary, it's a lot harder than it looks.

Best of luck!

Yes, it's opposite end of the spectrum to Deep Sky. Just as fiddly, but just in a different way. I do like the fact that it doesn't require travel to a dark sky site. If I can get it working, realistically, I'll get more opportunity to do planetary photography than deep sky, so I figure it's worth trying to sort out.

Thanks for your encouraging words. Learning is what it's all about!

Cheers

Markus
