Greyhounds add to light pollution in Newcastle

Hi.
A new greyhound racing track has opened not far from my place at Newcastle

These images show what happens when a race meeting is on. They were shot from my front yard a short time ago with my 300D and 50mm lens.

Night sports can certainly hinder observing.

I have a personal story here. Back in 1992, the Sydney Morning Herald did a story on light pollution. They interviewed me, and photographed me with my telescope in front of the Harbour Bridge. It made the front page.

That night, I was at a Day-Night cricket game at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The irony...

Houghy,

No, we didn't even win the cricket that night. Australia was playing England as one of the games of the World Cup. Here's the scorecard...

Short of scheduling day-night games to coincide with Full Moon, we need more games under a roof!

Speaking of sport, frightfully busy night tonight. Cricket, League, AFL. I'm trying to follow all 3 at once.

Houghy,

It's the thrill of the hunt - whether it be celestial objects or securing a sporting win.

You should see what sort of community support you can garner against the lights at the dog track and kick up a stink about it - get it in the local paper etc. you never know your luck, you might be able to force them to install shields (not that it would fix the problem but it would be a start). Good luck!
