Graheme. These scopes have secondary adjustment screws that are *meant* to be collimated by the user. This will not void any warranty.

Shipping them across the country is bound to make any 'scopes optical alignment something less than perfect. Yours definitely looks decentered.
I'd give it a tweak for sure.

So Peter, are the scopes you sold f/8 or f/9. I must admit I didn't check what mine was.

Cheers

Peter: I've arranged to return this scope in lew of the F8/F9 issue anyway so we'll see how the next one goes and collimate it on arrival. Thanks for the 10/20% tip too. worked a treat.

Stuart: Isnt the only way to tell the F/ratio of these by imaging and comparing the FOV? This is only due the the lack of GSO markings on the tube (would a sticker hurt it?)

Grahame.

Why put a sticker on it probably thought we wouldn't know the difference anyhow and as obliging Aussies we'd take their word for it

The FL should be 1625mm or so. i.e. F8

That's a bit hard to do down here ATM

Clouds and no rain...

Might try a plate solve on one of the few subs I've managed to take with the scope.

Plate solve using The Sky 6 yields 0.87"/pixel. Mighty close to the 0.867 calculated for an 8" f/8 scope.

I also learnt how to do a plate solve in the sky!!

Stuart - my last post should have read "to confirm F/L" when talking about these particular GSO scopes
good to see you got the F/8 version, have you done any kind of collimation on the scope since getting it?

I bought CCDInspector.

Followed by a solid two weeks of rubbish weather except for one night when I drift aligned the mount and finished off an NGC 55 pic I was doing.

So in short, no.

Cheers

Thats some great work with CCD Inspector there! In the never ending battle for perfect collimation this nifty piece of software is a potent weapon.

Great link!

Graham, I have helped Trevor collimate his scope on a couple of occassions and these scopes are no more difficult to collimate then a SCT. Be careful with CCD inspector as there are a few tricks to get it working for you. That said I have got my best results using the program.

One other thing to potentially watch out for. The scope comes with 3 extension tubes. 2 short ones and one long one. On my sample, if you join a short one to the focuser - it has been machined in such a way that does not guarantee that the focuser will be square to the optical axis.
If you join the long one to the focuser it will always be square, but not guaranteed to be centered. (I think this is the lesser of 2 evils.)

I didn't notice any problem joining them to each other or to the scope.

If you take care when assembling it you should be okay.
