Ser ?

With the ASI 120now successfully converted to Peltier cooling I tried to set it to do DSO long exposure time imaging. It all looks good except for the fact that it cannot do FITS imaging as this does not work with OSC sensors !.

The options are AVI, BMP and SER. What is SER ? I've not heard of it in reference to astroimaging.
I can try with BMP, files are 3.5 meg so workable but does this have any other limitations with regard to sensitivity or processing before or after conversion to TIF for example.

The glass window arrived so the ASI is now full spectrum after I removed the IR window and a 1 hour cooling run on Sunday got me down to -3.5*C with no icing or dew showing. I'm feeding a small warmed air pipeline to the window from the fan on the radiator on the back of the Peltier. Just keeps the front window dry and clear.

Ta Ken, doesn't say much does it ... I'll try contacting the FireCapture people and see what they have to say. There must be some sort of processing software and method. Otherwise why include it ?

OK, Just FYI ..
SERies File Format is a video format. Registax6 apparently processes it.
http://www.er-c.org/cbb/info/TIAformat/

There is also a Planetary Image PrepPreprocessor (PIPP) software designed to strip out the worst frames before feeding them to Registax.

https://sites.google.com/site/astropipp/

Not where I wanted to go, I was aiming for long exposure DSO imaging so BMP is the only option I think unless I want to buy a mono camera and go to FITS.

Aaaah, the best laid plans of mice and men, how oft they go astray.

SER is just the binary format. PIPP will happily decode single frames too.

I'll have to see if SER works for long exposures then.
Played with PIPP last night. It seems to be mainly a frame quality system which allows rejection of sub-optimal frames in the video stream before stacking with Registax or similar.

It should work. I've used it with single frames before from my QHY5L-II. It doesn't have to do anything much, you don't even have to enable debayering. But most importantly, you need to tell it which format to output

Personally, I prefer to control the "quality" of my planetary frames in Registax, but I use PIPP to centre and crop the subject in the frames to reduce the size of the file being fed to Registax.
