Ian, Sejanus is a legend in my books, he captures amazing images.
Believe it or not there are people who can handle large lenses all day long, the trick is to know how to do it.

Get a load of this beast (has 8 EF 200mm f/1.8 USM lenses in a battery) , http://www.superwasp.org/images/8cams.jpg , called a Superwasp.

SuperWASP is the UK's leading extra-solar planet detection program comprising of a consortium of eight academic institutions which include Cambridge University, the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias, the Isaac Newton Group of telescopes, Keele University, Leicester University, the Open University, Queen's University Belfast and St. Andrew's University.
...The observatories each consist of eight wide-angle cameras that simultaneously monitor the sky for planetary transit events. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its parent star temporarily blocking some of the light from it (see the How it works section). The eight wide-angle cameras allow us to monitor millions of stars simultaneously enabling us to detect the rare transit events.

You'd appreciate IS then or maybe the brides like their photos a bit blurry.

well i used a 200/1.8 for years that doesn't have IS, must have been lucky hey?

You don't need IS with a f/2 or f/1.8 lens outdoors at a wedding, typically shutter speeds are in the thousands with those apertures in a typical aussie day.

Yeah... thats one of the many many advantages of an F/1.8 ~ F/2.8, The ability to shoot in less light without needing to up the ISO or use IS or a flash...

(not to mention the sharpness... )
