Custom Foam for Custom Case

Hi all

Since adding the focuser to my scope, I no longer can use the case it came in to store the scope.
Fine by me, I plan to make a custom case that will take the scope plus the flatteners and maybe my camera.

To that end, does anyone know what type of foam is used in these cases and what's best?

I have a few Pelicases, Kincromes and some Craftright cases with foam inserts, but feel this type of foam is very soft. Too soft?

I have a Canon 500 f/4 in one of my Pelicans that seems to hold up well but the Esprit 120 is a lot heavier than the Canon.

Cheers
Adam

I use ‘closed cell expanded polyethylene foam’ for the cases I make. Easy to cut and glue.

I use a Pelican 1740 (I think as it was a long time ago) to fit my ESPRIT ED120 with moonlite focuser, 7x50mm filter wheel and QHY600ph all connected together.

Originally a zwo asi 1600mmpro and filters but upgraded to QHY and just cut foam bigger

I like the image train to be intact to reduce ingress of dust and let me take flats later at home and not waste imaging time at night

This, together with a single board with electronics (USB, DEW, Focus control, power dist) screws onto a losmandy top plate speeds up my setup which is portable

Go to Clark Rubber and ask for high density foam.
I use it in all my cases. It holds everything (heavy items as well) without sagging.

They will also cut it to your requirements.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions

Greg - I didn't even know about that case! Wow. Would you have a picture to share of how the telescope fits into the Pelican? That sounds perfect!

I use high density foam from Clark rubber. Draw an outline of the item on the foam and cut with an electric bread knife for a clean finish. Regards Mark

well, I just ordered that Pelican! Amazon had it with a massive discount. The black version was close to 50% off the price of the other colours, with foam included. No brainer. I've purchased that.

Thanks for the curve-ball, Greg

Happy days

It turned up from Amazon today. This case is massive, but it fits everything with room to spare.

Thanks, Greg!

Bit late now as I see you've bought a case but I did 'surgery' on my Esprit 120 case to accommodate the focuser I added. I just sliced a bit of the foam out to accommodate it.
