Recommendations on a tripod please

Hi all,

I am looking for an entry level alt-az tripod with a minimum 9kg payload rating for a Lunt Ha 60mm solar scope.

This would be for visual and I don't want the expense of a EQ or tracking. I have looked at camera shops but most of them at 5-6kg rating.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who is using a similar setup and what they use.

Thanks in advance

Are you looking for a tripod only or a tripod plus an alt-az mount on top?

Bintel normally have an Alt-Az Skyview, payload 9kg for $399 but are sold out.
I have one of those and they are pretty good.

Andrews Communications has a similar GSO one but also sold out.

OZscopes have a Skywatcher AZ5 with heavy duty tripod. Payload 9kg.
Fairly pricey at $550.

See if you can find a no longer made and therefore second hand Manfrotto 075 or 075B (Black version).

It's a beast and in the linked video below you'll see it supporting an approximately 70kg person which is amazing given its approximate 6-7kg mass. There are many different tripod heads to suit it. I have an 075B with a model #136 head which makes a great wedge for an AZ GTi mount. The 075 tripod has an extending centre column which in case of use with a telescope is good for getting the scope away from tripod legs, when pointing up high.

Best
