Repurposing useless binoculars.

I have a pair of cheap 10-90x 60mm binoculars I was given. The collimation is IMMENSELY out of kilter[ like about a third of the field of view], and no
adjustment is provided, as most of the components are glued in place.
The optics are actually not bad, so I decided to see what I could do with them. They are quite heavy at a little over a kilo, so I removed the left tube
and objective[my poorer eye], and the left prisms and eyepiece glass, and
blanked off the left eyepiece aperture. I left the magnification adjustment
mechanism in place, so I now have a 10-90x 60mm monocular, which
still has the whole binocular body, so that it is used with both hands, and is
comfortable to use having retained both eyepiece structures complete with eyecups, so you use it just like a pair of binos, and it weighs 31% less.
Just a thought for any one with damaged binos.

Very handy. I'm in a Facebook group that turns the eyepieces from old binoculars into telescope eyepieces. Yet another use for old binoculars.

Cheers.

Hi Raymo,

As another possibility I once saw a Youtube video where a binocular objective element was used to make a focal reducer. I don't remember why now, but I seem to recall thinking that he might have been a forum member, Ken James, but I'm not sure. Here it is for interest.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9l66Sch9PWY
