Took this monday last around 9.30 with my meade 14'' sct and zwo asi 290 colour. stacked the best 90% of five thousand images in registax and no other processing used. appreciated any feed back please

You have some really nice detail and colour coming through there John but you've done some strange things with the wavelets in Registax. I would have expected a better result from a 14 inch aperture telescope. Was the seeing poor that night? I would go back and have a play with the wavelet sliders in Registax and see if you can achieve a cleaner result by using Gaussian Dyadic and moving Layer 1 slider to near 100%, Layer 2 to about 80%, Layer 3 about 20% and leave the rest at their default setting. If using Gaussian Linear, depending on how many frames you've taken, you can pretty much crank all Layers to about 100% and pull them back a bit if necessary.

That's a good start there John. With your rig you'll be able to produce some really great planetary images.

Just remember that if the seeing is no good then it doesn't matter what equipment you've got, it'll be nigh on impossible to produce a good result.

Remember that focus is (as ever) absolutely critical and it's far from easy to get sharp focus. Spend plenty of time getting this absolutely nailed (much easier in good seeing).

Stacking 90% of frames seems a lot. Most imagers stack somewhere between 10-50% of the best frames but each capture is different so experiment with different amounts.

The current consensus is that best processing method is to stack in Austostakkert 3 (as it has a more advanced stacking algorithm) and then move on to Registax for wavelet sharpening. It means learning another program (it's free however) and there are online tutorials which help you learn how to navigate these programs.

As Mick said you generally only need the first few wavelet sliders in Registax. You can actually put the percentage limit of the first one up well past 100% and don't forget to increase the noise reduction on the left as you increase the slider.

John,
Firstly this is a nice result which you should be proud of- good work.

I’d back the last two comments with emphasis on reducing the frames accepted form your data set. Check the analysis graph in Autostackert and see where the graph dips below reasonable quality. With the variable seeing conditions this always means you lose a significant amount of keepers and generally 20-30% of frames should be used only. You will then find the end result will be much easier to stretch and sharpen in Registax leaving you with a better end product.

Keep it up/plenty to take in as we all do.
