Synscan handset update help

Hi. I'm old enough to know that if it isn't broken, don't fix it. But I also like using the latest software.

My GOTO dob handset had quite old software on it, and I wanted to upgrade to the latest version. However, it gets about 3-5% through the upload and freezes. I've searched and read through a large number of forums with no joy.

Some of the solutions include trying 2 different cables, 3 different uploaders (ver 3.0, 3.3 and 3.5) as well as 3x firmware versions. Handset is now useless. If you live in Melbourne, have successfully updated your software and are able to help me upload the software, please PM.

Thanks
Scott

Glad you got it sorted :-) I successfully updated my v5 handset and AZ-EQ6 mount on the weekend and can understand how nervous it can make you. These are expensive things; you don’t want to brick them.

Scott, Alex,

I have a AZ-EQ6 with V5 hand controller and have never updated anything.
Why does this seem to be such a hit or miss process?
I would not mind having the latest updates but not if it is a doubtful process.

Rgds

Michael.

It was definitely a nervous week while I waited for the USB-direct cable (FTDI chipset which plugs directly from USB to the handset).
Apparently the controller is a bit sensitive, especially the V3 handsets as they use OLD technology: a phone-line connection at the handset with a DB9 serial connector at the other. With a v5 handset, from memory they use a USB printer cable so you're less likely to have issues.

It's recommended to slow the speed to "Lo" or "Mi" on the handset, but having exhausted all options multiple times I just used the normal speed and that worked. Definitely not doing it again to test repeatability.

One important thing was that I didn't flash the bootloader first as that can apparently brick it, but I had v1.7 which is the latest version anyway.

I am happy with the upgrade though - my software was c.6-7 years old and it added a lot more user-friendly tweaks to my setup.
