M16 - Pillars

Gave the Pillars a try for the first time this season, and only the 2nd time I've imaged them. Last year was with an Esprit 80 which is too short for this object. Even the Esprit 120 I used this year could do with more focal length but certainly an improvement!

Only managed to grab about 2.5 hrs of data before the target went behind a tree in my backyard but hopefully get the chance to add to it sometime soon.

Processed as HOO.

That looks really nice Craig, that L-Extreme filter has brought out those Pillars in fine detail and the colours are great too. The Esprit 120 is a lovely scope, I bet you find that extra aperture and focal length a huge improvement over the Esprit 80.

Yes the 120 is definitely a big improvement on objects like this. Of course, some don't come close to fitting in with it but that's OK, I don't mind a tighter view

I use APT for imaging. Settings just unity gain, 3 min subs.

They can decommission (well almost) the Hubble... this is brilliant!
I would Steve and ask you too - what times and gain did you use to capture this and what soft to process - APP or PI?

Thanks. Settings are in another reply further up, stacked in APP and processed in Photoshop.

Lovely colour and detail, great image. Prefer the colour interpretation you've used compared to other variations.

Only processed in Photoshop? That's remarkable... Can't believe that's only 2.5 hours. I'm trying tonight!

Cheers. Without Sii data my choice of palette is a bit more limited!

Thanks, all I use is Photoshop really. I've got a Pixinsight licence but haven't spent the time to learn to use it, and APP whilst a great tool for stacking, isn't overly useful (IMO) for processing. I will stack (and if necessary do channel combine) in APP then do the rest in PS.

I want more data on it but I've been doing Helix Nebula the last two nights. That needs loooots of integration so M16 was pushed back

Keen to see your Helix when ready. I’ve given that thing almost 6-7 nights of integration and just don’t like how it turns out.

Also would love to know your workflow in PS!

I'm pretty happy with mine after 2 nights (11 hrs) but want to add more tonight if I can. Needs a lot of signal to clean up the noise this one.

I don't really have a set workflow, I treat each image differently. But typically for most images after bringing into PS I would clean up noise and colour noise first, do any exposure blending required via luminosity masking or blend-if (eg for M42 this needs to be done) then it just depends on the image and target. Levels and curves adjustments, colour adjustments etc.
