40D Bulb control?

I am now the proud owner of a 40D. Lovely!

Playing with it this evening, I find a key difference from the trusty 350D - on the old camera, I used a shutter release cable supplied by Shoestring to connect to the PC via a USB port. It cost me about $15.00.

But the 40D has a different connection - looking at the Shoestring website, it seems the cable + connection box will cost me close to US$90.00. Is this right? How else do you control bulb shots from the pc? Previously I used Images Plus.

Any suggestions would be welcome

Pete

Hi Pete
Your 40d comes with a usb cable and software called eos utility.
There are two eos utility programs for different canon models. Install the appropriate one for the 40d.
Be aware that you cannot use mlu and interval control from the eos software.
For that you need tcn 80 remote controller.
Refer to the thread "examples of liveview with 40d"
Regards
Steve

Translate - doesn't the 40D expose longer duration bulb mode functionality directly via the USB2 connection (with the MLU limitation) - without the need for a seperator bulb cable into a ShoeString adapter nowadays?

It works directly from the EOS camera control program that comes with the camera.
You connect your camera via the supplied cord and then turn the camera on with it set on manual.
On the remote control software you make the exposure time "bulb". There is a little icon that brings up a very simple controller for interval shooting and bulb exposures. I make it 300 sec and start it. No need for any other connection to the camera. The only other settings I fiddle with are RAW, ASA800 (or what you like) and change the white balance from auto to daylight.
Just be very careful not to stuff it by breaking the connector off as I did 2 nights ago. See http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...ad.php?t=28399

Thanks for that guys - of course I should read the instructions first!

My only question now - can I still use Images Plus or do I need to use the Canon software?

Sorry, I don't know anything about image plus. I use the canon software for capture and ID of the raw files and then process them with Iris. You could do the same with Image plus for the processing.

Thanks for all the tips guys.

I've been using the Mac in Windows so Icould use Impages Plus. Now that the LiveView seems to work well in both (and PHD has a Mac version too!) I'll leave IP to processing the RAW to TIFF and doing the Digital Development thingy.

Now all I need is for the clouds in Sydney to clear!

Still doing my homework

Looks like ASCOM is Windows-based only ie it doesn't work with Mac.

So to use the Mac with PHD, I need the Shoestring GUSB. Can anyone confirm please

Thanks

Why do you need to use ASCOM?
What is the mount?

LXD75 Terry.

There's no guide port but I've been using the auxiliary port on the Autostar hand controller with PHD.

Of course I should upgrade to something a bit more grown up - but with the new camera I expect major expenditure is not necessarily a good plan at the mo

Yes, you can use Images Plus with the 40D. Mike Unsold the developer of IP does his latest tutes using the 40D. As stated, no bulb capture cable needed, it is all done through the USB port on the camera.
