NEW Canon 50D coming out shortly...

Hi Guys,

This just came in:

http://www.anandtech.com/digitalcame...oc.aspx?i=3388

15.1 mpixel with digi4 processor! This also captured my interest:

The EOS 50D Digital SLR camera’s 15.1-megapixel CMOS APS-C size image sensor has been improved thanks to the use of newly designed gapless microlenses over each pixel to reduce noise and expand sensitivity up to ISO 12800.

and this:

Users can choose from one of four settings– Standard/Weak/Strong/None – to help reduce digital noise that can result from poor lighting conditions.

It will be very very tasty. Thoughts guys?

Also, canon's new Lens on the bottom of the page. much like the 28-135mm IS 3.5/5.6 lens but its 18-200mm!! it will be reallly nice.

New EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens
Canon has answered the call from advanced amateur photographers looking for a solid all-around lens with the introduction of the new EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens. With an incredible focal length range equivalent to 29-320mm in the 35mm format, the new EF-S 18-200mm lens will make an excellent addition to any camera bag, and it gives shooters a great lens to capture both standard as well as telephoto images. The new lens features Canon’s built in Optical Image Stabilization system which gives the equivalent effect of a shutter speed roughly 4 steps faster, for better image clarity, even in shaky shooting conditions. With a minimum focusing distance of 0.45m/1.5 ft. at all zoom settings, this new lens should prove to be ideal for those situations where swapping lenses isn’t an option. An ideal complement to the EOS 50D SLR camera and all other EF-S compatible EOS SLR cameras, the EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens is scheduled to be in stores this October at an estimated selling price of $699.00.

Yep been waiting on this announcement for about a week now and the rumours turned out to be true.
Here's also a link to the USA Canon site.
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/co...&modelid=17499

Wonder how it will perform with 15mp on an APS-C sensor?
ISO 12800 hmmm very interested to see how it performs.

Interesting, "AF microadjust" with a 20 lens memory.

Pixel size is 4.7 micron.

Very interesting.

Maybe my 70-200 will be able to stretch its legs with this camera body.

"The Canon EOS 50D Digital SLR camera is scheduled for October delivery"

That's a surprise, I didn't expect it until early next year??

Nice bit of kit ....

However ---- more pixcels in the same size chip and higher effective ISO capability do not necessarily mean it will be better for astroimaging than a 40D.

You could use software to 2x2 bin and image at 2376 x 1584, with a 9.4 micron effective pixel size. Sure, it won't be as efficient as a CCD with that native resolution, but it would get the job done.

I'll be curious to see some testing done of this new sensor in regards to noise and sensitivity, as well as see if the new anti-dust coating has any impact on sensitivity at any frequencies.

As long as the anti-dust shake doesnt block out h-alpha wavelengths, that should be fine.

That's quick, ahead of their usual 18-month cycle. 40D was just released Aug. last year. I guess with the increasing demand for such a camera, they want to quickly cash in on it. I'll stick to my 40D until the full-frame 5D replacement comes out.

Is there a full frame replacement 5D on it's way or is it the same as the current model.

We're expecting a new 5D MkII (or a similar name, 7D etc) full frame model to replace the current 5D soon.
Announcement from Canon Japan is anticipated at Photokina in Germany in September.
