Question Alternative for canon 28-105, for digital

G'day all,

My Fiance is upgrading from her EOS 30 (film) to EOS 500D.

Her most commonly used lens with the EOS 30 is the canon 28-105 USM. On the digital that's not going to be wide enough, becoming 45mm at it's widest.

What would people recommend as a lens in that zoom range with reasonable image quality ? Canon or Sigma I'm thinking.

Have considered....
Canon 24-105 F/4L: 24mm is still not very wide
Canon 17-85 F/4-5.6 USM: Unsure how image quality will be

... other ideas??

Sigma's range confuses me - never know which acronym's are good or better.

She has the 100-400F/4-5.6 L for the long end.

Thanks,
Roger.

Roger,

Unfortunately, I don't think you're going to find anything in the L-series to fit that range.

The 17-85 might be the way to go.

Roger, if you don't want Image Stabilisation, then the 17-70 Sigma f2.8-4.5 is an excellent choice. The Sigma is IMO close to the L series lenses for performance, and in my experience the 17-70 has less CA than the 24-105L Canon (I had both for a while). I've seen user reports claiming comparable or better performance from the 17-70 with the 17-40L.

The L series Canons may just edge the Sigma out on contrast and flare resistance, although I didn't ever test the two specifically to verify. The Sigma is also has quite a decent Macro capability.

Thanks to you both for your replies..

That 17-70 sigma looks pretty good. It's a shame the HSM version is only applicable to Nikon mount - did you have the non-HSM version and can you tell me how good the focusing speed/noise was as a result?

The macro capability is appealing, as is the F/2.8! All round sounds pretty good actually.

Roger.

I've got the Sigma 17-70 and do all my landscape and widefield astro stuff with it. It's a great lens, and as Phil said, the macro end at 70mm is quite handy.

I had the Canon version, focussing was quiet and accurate on my 20D, I bought the lens after reading a recommendation by Terry Lovejoy and finding a lot of favourable comment on the web. I'd still have it if it wasn't for the changing to a 5DII. BTW the F2.8 isn't constant it varies from F2.8 to f4.5 at the telephoto end, still respectable though.

Which lens

I had the same problem with which lens to upgrade to for my 350D. Spent hours on the net. Go to http://www.photozone.de website and they have a large number of reviews for canon, nikon, pentax and sony lenses and are easy to understand.

I would of loved the 24-105 f4 L but out of my budget so I bought the Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM which on the 350d is 39-136mm. A bit of a compromise on field of view but very good image quality.

Out of all the reviews I read for 18mm to XXXmm lenses, you cannot have sharp pictures throughout all the zoom ranges. Hope this helps.

Regards
Kon
