40D Enthusiast Kit finally on its way

Think I got a good price - $1780 (including insured shipping from Paxtons Sydney to Newcastle - $30 is cheaper than driving there .)

Asked for a 4 gig Extreme 3 memory card too.

Camera House, Bing Lee ,Harvey Norman Discounts were all a waste of time couldn't come close to that (I get a GENUINE CANON AUSTRALIA warantee too.)

Now to decide where to buy the 70-200mm f2.8 L IS and the TC80N3.

Hi Ian,

There is a much cheaper LCD remote controls available for all canon models. They have all functions that TC80N3 has and work excellent. Try to search eBay for "Canon 40d LCD remote". They cost around $50 which includes shipping.

cheers,

Mike

I think this is the one Mike is refering to...
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Aputure-Timer...742.m153.l1262

I bought one and I think there's a few in our club.
Work fine, do eveything the genuine Canon one does at nowhere near the price.

Welcome to the 40D club Ian...

let me know when you get that great price on the 70-200mm f2.8 L IS... I'll be hanging out for one of those, but they're a bit steep retail

Prices on the 40D are certainly coming down.
I paid $2140 for my 40D plus 17-85mm lens in October last year.
(Same retailer now has it for $1655)

I'll look into the remote , just a little worried about using anything that might make the warantee null in void if it does something nasty to rhe electronics or camera programming.....

I'm using one of the cheapies on my 20D as well and have had np so far. Even gone so far as to get it modded so that I can plug my serial to 2.5mm 300D computer controlled bulb cable into it.(try saying that with your mouth full ) I can now operate the 20D from a number of programs hiccupless. If you are a bit nervous you can get the whole setup including the TC80N3 and a serial cable from Hap Griffin from Shoestring astronomy. (he uses a 3.5mm plug for the conversion though so you can't use his 350D remote cable)

I was tempted to wait a few months for the Canon 45D or 50D or 1000D to be released but if you always wait for the latest there will always be another better upgrade coming and well ....

Steep ?.... that's not the word I would use , how about high way robbery ? extortionate ? I refuse to pay over $3000 for a 70-200mm f2.8 L IS locally when I can probably get the same lens for less than $1700 if I buy it overseas.

I've asked for quotes using parcel post (NOT A COURIER !!!) from a couple of places in the USA and one in HK. I'll probably get a 2x or 1.4x convertor too. (Which is better ??)

Canon are offering a nice cash rebate in the USA (about $200 USD) - if I can get that too , that'll make it even more affordable.

How long does a 40D Canon battery last before you need to recharge it if you are doing a campaign of long exposures ?

Collected the 40D Enthusiast Kit from the post office this avo.

Gonna take a while to wade through the manual and get familiar with the menus and what all the buttons do.

Drove the wife crazy once I figured out how to turn it on taking closeups and naughty photos. (all duely deleted ! I hope when I said delete.)

US1Camera and TrrState Camera (USA have the 70-200mm f2.8 L IS for 1550 USD , works out $1620 before postage . Have asked for USPS Airparcel postage (with Ins) from them (should be something about 50USD I image , but doesn't hurt to ask).
The 2x teleconvertor and TC80N3 are pretty cheap from them too.

If they slip through the post office without asking me for GST (never paid GST on an import by post yet) I'll be an even happier camper.

Anyone bothered putting their cameras inside Body Armour ? only costs $80 and looks like a good way of protecting the body from bumps and moisture.
