Anyone using the ASI294 mm? (moving to Mono)

Hi Folks,
Anyone using the ASI294 mm Pro? Would be interested in your experience and also any comparison to the ASI183 mm Pro. Particularly interested in the use of Bin 1 Mode (small pixels) as I use Esprit 100. The ASI2600mm is outside my price range.

The Bin1 and Default Bin2 mode appears to offer the ability to use both long and short FL. It aslo has a wider field of view than the ASI183 and the ability for me to keep the 1.25" filters.

According to ZWO Unlocked Bin1 gives: 12bit ADC, 2.3um pixel size, 47 megapixels, 8288*5644 resolution, 14k full well capacity

Saw this review at http://www.astrosurf.com/buil/asi294mm/

Many thanks

Chris.

I have the QHY294m and had the ASi183m Pro.

As far as a comparison between these 2, the 294 has a larger field of view plus the flexibility of the 47mp mode. I have only used it though in the 11mp mode so at this stage can't comment apart from the fact QHY had issues in 47mp with banding. I believe this was fixed in a firmware upgrade but I can't confirm that.

I did not have banding in 11mp mode. QE is super high. The 183 also has high QE but the 294's is a bit higher.

Amp glow is a little worse in the 294 compared to the 183. The 183 just had amp glow on the right side. The 294 has amp glow on the right hand side and a little bit on the left side.

In 11mp mode I had no trouble and everything cleaned up nicely with callibration.

Either sensor is great but the 294 is larger so that wins out for me.
Its also potentially more flexible assuming the reported banding issue is fixed. ASI294 was also reporting banding in 47mp mode.

Greg.

Thanks Greg,
Much appreciated. Does your QHY294m work with 1.25" filters?

Thanks

Its the same size as the ASI1600 so best someone who uses 1.25 filters answers. All my filters are 50mm square.

I've been using the ASI294mm for a month now and have been very happy with the results. I can't compare it to other mono cameras as until now I have only used OSC. It has more amp glow than other OSC cameras I've used, but i find nothing that doesnt calibrate out with simple flats. darks and bias - some people say you need to use flat darks instead of bias with this camera but I have tried both and no discernible difference so will stick with bias.

I've used it exclusively in narrowband (3.5nm) and no issues at least when using it in 2x2 bin mode and using exposures long enough to really swamp any pattern/read noise... 300s seems to do the trick. I think there's a lot of fiddliness than can add to variable experience and reports... i had a day scratching my head with some rubbish stacks when I realised that my flats (from NINA) had defaulted to 1x1 bin...that's something to watch for. Anyway proof is in the pudding ...here's a few from the last month.
