What a great idea ! I take it that the top edge gasket makes it quite waterproof?

Little... but not cheap. Paid $3600 for it :-)

That will make a huge difference to the room you will have in the car. Might I suggest if you have not already thought of it to use more foam above the tripod and mount. Bumps in the road will likely dislodge the gear from the slotted positions and could create havoc in the trailer.
