Canon 350D, are they that good.

Hi all

I have noticed from a lot of posts on this sits that everyone either has, or wants, the Canon 350D, DSLR for their imaging, are they the best suited for this type of photography.

If so i might have to get one too, but i would first have to sell off a mountain of Pentax gear.

Could someone "please Explain".... why they are that good.

Thanks Leon

h0ughy has a Pentax, and he bought a Canon for astro work. Go figure

Great value for money, configurable in every way you need, 8mp of goodness and good signal to noise ratio even at iso1600.

I don't use mine a lot for astro work, but for terrestrial stuff I love it.

unfortunately they are good cameras, but don't sell of your Pentax gear. I am looking into getting an adapter for the Pentax K mount to the Canon EOS camera. I have a 50-500 lens that is worth a small fortune, and I wish to prolong is life wit h me.

Yea, your right i best keep the Pentax stuff, after all iv'e invested a small fortune into the gear over the years, and also have pricey 170-500 APO
1:5-6.3 Lens, which i must say is brilliant.

Maybe i could just buy the Canon Body and use that for imaging.

Thanks Fella's

Leon keep your Pentax gear and do what you said just buy the Canon body for imaging.
If you do this then why not go a step further and get a modded 350D which is much more sensitive for astro work.
I know the cost is higher but it's the best of both worlds then.

They are capable of stunning astrophotography - but the best?

Not by a long shot.

However I can't think of anything else in the price range that comes close.

The next step up will cost you considerably more (for DSLR or dedicated astro CCD).

Houghy. If you find a Pentax K adaptor to fit the 350d please post it in the forum. I am looking at buying a 350d, and my Dad has a few really expensive lenses for his pentax super. I believe they are a k mount and it would be really good to put them to use again.

Andrew, can you buy the modded version off the shelf, so to speak, or do you have to get someone to do that, if so, where would i be able to find one.

Thanks Leon

I've been giving the canons a furtive glance, not for Astroimaging, but for terestrial use. I notice a 300 EOS, that is about 8.2 megapixel, and $400 or so more costly than the 350. Apart from the fact (I thought) that the 350 replaced to 300, anyone know if the 'new' 300 is much better than the 350?

cheers,
Doug

Leon, as Houghy and Striker have said you can buy them from Hutech.
Also I've delt with OPT in the USA and have been very happy with their service and they carry the 350D mod too.

Doug,

You're thinking of the 30D. The 30D has superceded the 20D.

Humayun

I am extremely happy with my 350D.
The colour accuracy, quick and sharp focus etc etc are just outstanding for the price.

At one stage I considered making an EOS-K adapter for my Pentax lenses. Although it could be done, it requires removal of the aperture lever at the back of the lens .

I have never see a detailed review of a Pentax DSLR for astrophotography. They could perform better than people think.

Hi terry,

Don't get me wrong, the Pentax IstD that i use dose do a pretty got job, not that i can show you any fantastic images with it yet as i'm just begining Astro Imaging with the digital, i've always been a film person, with good results.
But i dont think that the Pentax is the best suited for this kind of work.
I think camers now produced are specifically for astro-photography, which the Pentax is not.

Still i'm only learning the digital craze, so what do i know, i leave it to the more experienced at the moment and learn from them.

G'day Leon, the 350d is awsome for both astro and terrestrial use.
It is a pleasure to use and learn the ins and outs of basic photography.

Comparisons between the 350 and other cameras, see the canon come out on top in most aspects.

Even for a beginner it's a breeze to shoot and master its functions.

As for an astro camera, it does a pretty darn good job of capturing all the popular neb targets even the fainter ones unmodded used either, prime focus, piggybacked and even tripod mounted.

I am more than happy with the results this camera has given me, it definately is "that good".

Here is a link for a side by side comparison of the 350 and the 30d http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/comp...s350d&show=all

Good luck with your choice.

I havent tried my fringekiller or the IR/uv filter on the 50mm lens yet. I think the lens makes all the difference too, they are not top quality lenses inthe *istds's defence. they will get a good workout at duckadang.
