OPEC and others oil producers are keeping production low to keep prices high.
Australia has shot itself in the foot with getting rid of it's refineries and relying
on the Singapore crude trade system.
We have little reserves so are at the mercy of OPEC etc.
We have no way to store oil anymore as various governments
sold off the facilities for real estate.
Cheers

Saw a 7 Eleven near Thornbury at $1.55 a few days ago, nearly drove off the road in shock!

We're going for both feet being shot off here. No real support to get off the fossil fuel "drug" either when we have the resources for it and the clear benefits for everyone if we do it right...

Australia has never looked to the future in terms of energy needs. Any country with a decent navy could block supplies and bring Australia to its knees without even firing a shot.

20 years ago we were one of the largest producers of solar panels in the world. We could have been world leaders in that space. Instead, we hobbled that industry and it went elsewhere. Pity, would have been a nice fallback position for when coal began its inevitable decline.

What a waste, Australia could have been a leader in so many fields including nuclear, renewable energy etc. Squandered because there are too many Luddites in this country who have no vision just slogans!

Lol, Ampol for me today - $1.52 minus my 12c so $1.40 for me.

And $1.48 at Costco.

The others I never bother with.

Due the incessant rain/cloud our PV panels have not produced as many ergs as they usually do, hence had to plug the Tesla into grid power overnight.

500km of range cost me about $6.00 at off peak rates. Bugger

P.S.
According to the ABS Survey of Motor Vehicle Use (SMVU), the average rate of fuel consumption of
passenger vehicles was 11.9 litres per 100 kilometres... @ say $1.80 per litre

$107.00 for the same 500km.

As soon as I can get an EV that fits my needs (or close to it as I can), I'm ditching ICE forever. And it's not just because of these ever increasing fuel prices.

Peter: not that it really matters for an overnight charge at home, but how long does that take to get that 500km range charge?

We have the Tesla Wall charger in our garage, so the charge rate is around 48km per hour. Assuming you have totally flattened the battery, then about 10 hours. I never let the range go below 200km, and set the charging to start at 10:00pm (to use off peak power) so by 4:00am it is fully charged.

If you plug into a Super charger (cost 50cents per kw/hr) I understand it will give 80% of full charge in 20 minutes or so.

EV's are great would love one if I could get

a) one that looks good, a lot are ugly and the good looking ones have sport car bodies

b) don't like SUV's want a station wagon seems every man and his dog thinks SUV's are better for some reason

c) one at a reasonable price I couldn't afford a new EV like most cars overpriced for something that depreciates so rapidly

d) range must be around 500k min

do any fit my buying list ??

A long range Tesla model 3 will give you 560km of real world range (Tesla's quoted 640km range is fanciful at best) but at $A80k is beyond many budgets.

Most major manufacturers (including GM) are going down the EV path, and given Australia no longer manufactures cars (or much else) ICE cars will be the exception rather than the rule.

Batteries and their energy densities continue to improve, and the prices are falling...hence all of the above will be moot in five years.

Rivian R1S - by the time it's available in Australia (I doubt before 2024) should be close to what you need. The base configuration is around 480 km range with versions that go up to 640 km range. Base configuration range has been confirmed, but not the longer range one. It looks like a station wagon type design - nice square back.

Will be good off road and have useful towing capacity as well.

I have no idea about depreciation for it - markets are weird these days with the whole demand/supply imbalance, plus the extra spanner of the world's fleet shifting from ICE to EV.

It's the one I'm hanging out for because it's the only thing I've found so far that gets close to meeting my requirements - range, towing, off-road, good interior space.

Unfortunately, by the time it hits our shores I'm expecting it to be ludicrously expensive.
