DIY observing chair

The latest lockdown cancelled my plans for the long weekend so I started ticking items off my DIY to-do list. I have a number of 60+ year-old Tazzie oak 3x2” beams from some renovation work a few years ago so upcycled a length into an observing chair. Front is a $2 bunnings pine offcut I had lying around.Tazzie oak is very hard and heavy so this is not very portable: it weighs around 10-12 kg, but it is sturdy.

Functional, rather than pretty was the goal so I didn’t invest too much time cleaning up the burn marks. While far from perfect, it works perfectly well. Finished by giving it a light coat or two of varnish just to help protect from dew. Job done - no more standing on tippy toes or breaking the back slouching to look through the eyepiece.

Nicely done - I suggest some padding for the - um - seat area!

Have fun

Thanks both. Hopefully I’ll get to use it properly soon when the varnish has fully dried. Extra padding is a good idea - have a cushion but something a bit more permanently attached might be a better solution.
