Incredibly sad news but also not surprising. He had been battling for a long time. Though I only knew him via IIS I feel a real sense of loss. I remember years ago expressing confidence that he would fulfil his dream of sailing solo around the world. He was already ailing but I felt that his positive attitude would see him succeed. That didn't happen but he never lost that 'I can do this' attitude that made him so inspiring.

When the great cricket commentator Allan McIlvrey passed away he was honoured with the song 'The game is not the same without McIlvrey.' I'm not about to burst into song but IIS will not be the same without Alex. He was a great person and I'll miss him.

Very sad news indeed. My thoughts go out to his family and friends.
Like many here, I only knew Alex through IIS, but he was a real character and enthusiastic about what he did. His posts, his presence, and his personality will be greatly missed.

While battling serious health issues, Alex gave a sparkle to IceInSpace with thoughtful and considered postings while keeping physically active with his many interests including astronomy, solar power, MX5, music, family and friends. A diamond lost to the forums here, gone to a greater realm.
Rest in peace Alex

Mark

Oh that is so sad to hear - condolences to his family

A respectful and respected member of the IIS community for as many years as I've been visiting.

I'll miss him

Vale Alex - I would really love it if in true Alex style he'd pop up in the next post saying "Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated!"

Very sad news indeed

We have all suffered a loss of huge proportions. Alex was admired and respected for all the right reasons and will not be forgotten.
I will miss his wit and wisdom first and foremost but his courage in the face of adversity contains the greatest lessons for us all.

He would be having a big laugh at that one Doug, he has pulled many a comeback so to speak,

Good bye Alex, you were a good hearted, entertaining, intriguing and intelligent member of Ice In Space and so many of us will miss your huge gamut of contributions, some cool, some strange, some quirky, sometimes even "what that Fu is he talking about?" and "Did he just say that?" and often very long contributions ...but all wonderful

I know you liked your food photos mate, so here is a last departing Eagleview concoction, from Sunday night, this time lamb shanks with red wine and Chorizo sausages. The two empty seats at the table and two glasses of red, a reminder of what we never did get to share in person but always hoped too

Rest in peace my friend

Very sad news to see. Alex was an inspiration for his positivity and was never shy about expressing his individuality. I hope he’s having fun seeing all the astro goodies up close. RIP Alex.

Sad to learn of this news. Seemed that Alex lived life to the fullest extent. He certainly added something special to the IIS Forum. Stimulating his readers to his very last post....

A Thank You from Alex's family

After starting this Condolence thread, and seeing the responses pour in, I had provided a link to Alex's family so they could follow the expressions of appreciation of Alex's life and contribution to this community.

Yesterday I had a message back from Sandy, and I am including it here (below), for all to read.

"Thanks Glen, Sascha and I have read the posts and are very touched by all the comments. I don't know how to get onto the forum so please pass on our thanks to everyone for their kind words. Regards Sandy.
