Lunar Eclipse Widefield Animation

This one is a widefield version of the more natural version.

The starfield is a mosaic of 3 panels I shot the night after the eclipse when the moon had moved closer to Antares. It's good enough to make a scaffold and register the moon video. When I get color I'll do another montage with the whole shebang as that part of the sky is very colorful.

So what I did was registering the stars in the video during totality to the static starfield. I had 100 frames or so to play with. That was enough to give me a small segment to orient and extrapolate the complete moon path. Then I got a few screen grabs from sky safari for the beginning, totality and end of the sequence as I had the exact time stamps.

That gave me two things.

The start and end points for the moon path and speed along with the totality accurate placement.

The motion of the earth shadow. Start, totality and end of the sequence.

Then it was all a matter of keyframing and letting it play. The moon is layered as screen for clarity. It's quite interesting to see the shadow moving and it becomes obvious watching it why it was so short and so bright.

Hope you enjoy the sequence. It wasn't straight forward to put together but in the end it works and it's quite interesting

Thanks mate. Yeah I like that one with a different perspective. I have all the motions down pat now. Once I have all the colors I can easily replace the background and do something really groovy with the sequence. RB is partial to Michael Jackson moonwalk

This is so fantastic and great to share with friends and family to show what's actually happening.
Well done mate.

I cant wait to see you do it - right at the end of the sequence accompanied by the Thriller soundtrack in the background.

This should be part of an astro course. Certainly great for outreach work. You actually see what's going on.

Thanks Pete. Gotta get some colors now for the background so that'll give me an excuse to make a mosaic of the blue horse head.

Yes it would be cool as a visualisation.

I really like that projection of the umbra and penumbra. What software does that?

Cheers

It's traced manually from sky safari snapshots.

Excellent work Marc. Beautifully done. The slow moving earth shadow over the star field is a brilliant addition to the great eclipse imaging.

Thanks Ray. Yeah I might redo the 2014 one with the same concept.

Excellent effort Marc, particularly pleasing to see the movement of Earth's shadow. When I attempted a similar montage in 2018, I was puzzled why the shadow was skewed at one end when I did a lighten blend of the entire sequence. Only after some mulling did I realise the shadow was also moving with respect to the stars. I can relate to your 'wasn't straight forward to put together' comment. I think I spent 6 months on my video - https://vimeo.com/273224996

Thanks Colin. Cool video. Yes I never thought twice about the earth shadow either until putting it together which shows that eclipse diagrams with the moon phases with timestamps and names overlayed over a static umbra and penumbra on various websites, including NASA are just indicative.
