New to Astro Photography

Hi all just starting out looking for info on Astro photography.

A warm welcome to IIS

I’ll be the first to ask the obvious question - what part of Astrophotography are you interested in ??

1/ Wide field Astrophotography with just a DSLR, tripod or portable sky tracker ( images across the night sky mainly showing the Milky Way etc … )

2/ Long Exposure Deep Sky Astrophotography with a telescope and mount ( preferably Equatorial Mount or EQ mount ) Images of Deep Sky Objects or DSO’s in detail including Nebula , Galaxies , clusters , comets and so on etc…

3/ Planetary Astrophotography with a telescope and Equatorial Mount ( images of the Moon and Planets

4/ Short Exposure Deep Sky Astrophotography or EAA ( Electonically Assisted Astronomy ) Similar objects to item 2

5/ Both Long Exposure Deep Sky and Planetary Astrophotography ( quite popular )

6/ Solar Astrophotography ( imaging our Sun )

7/ All of the above ( $$$$ )

All the above types of Astrophotography require different types of equipment, skill level , budget and time to produce images.
Also your location plays an important part as well ( obviously the darker the location the better )

Probably item 2 and 3 are the most popular across all the fields of Astrophotography

I’ll leave it there for now

Maybe some more information when you get a chance so myself or other folk can assist you further with the hobby

Martin, that's a really nice welcoming response to Julian's request for some information. It's what I like about this website. A nice bunch of people eager to help each other out and share their knowledge and experience with those just starting out. Not bad when you can get a response less than 90mins after the original post. Well done mate, it's members like you that make this such an enjoyable forum.

It’s not easy this hobby as I found out myself as a late starter into retirement. Yes I agree this forum has a wonderful group of aspiring amateur astronomers always willing to help both each other and new comers to this wonderful hobby.
