QHY9M First light - Eta Carina

I can finally image during a full moon and under heavy light pollution. Camera arrived early this morning and for some reason the sky was clear this evening??? Has anyone ever heard of this bizarre phenomena?

Anyways, I made a couple of first light blunders. Forgot to decrease the cooling temperature (had it set to -10c from my previous camera), so this meant that the image was a bit noisy with hot pixels abound. Took some darks so its a bit better but next image should be much cleaner.

11x 180sec lights with 6nm Ha filter (1.25")
11x 180sec darks

Processed in photoshop. Any feedback or tips would be great as this is my first narrowband mono image. It's a whole another world!

Nice one tony.

Lots of depth and detail.

One day I hope to go NB.

I wonder what colour Alex sees in this image

Good one Tony, a lot of detail. As I am a Collingwood supporter I love those colours.

Well done Tony on your first NB image!
Great details. Maybe a bit too sharp for my liking, but that's a personal taste issue.

Good Luck Tony, you have now taken a step towards the dark side.
Narrowband imaging is very scientific and the results are always amazing, being able to image under light pollution will change everything, I'm sure you will excel in this new method.( I would too like to try this one day....)

All the best,
Nice start by the way.

Anth

Thanks guys, still getting used to processing monochrome images. Next on the agenda is to figure SGP out to get some high res mosaics going.

Hi Tony,
Did you also use the colour (RGB) filters, or did you just use the Ha filter? I thought that with mono cameras you have to use LRGB as well as the NB filters

Awesome. I’m on a similar adveture with a cooled mono camera and an Ha filter. Still find it hard to believe what is possible from a Brisbane backyard! OIII and SII next?

Really nice Tony. Looks a whole lot cleaner than my OSC stuff. Tempting...

This is just with a Ha filter, if you want a colour image, you do need to do LRGB and combine those data with Ha, I've done a HaRGB combine for mistrel nebula in my other thread. If you dont use the RGB filters, than the images remain monochrome.

Currently only Ha and HaRGB when I can, can't afford filters as of yet, when I finish paying off the Ha filter I bought, OIII is next so i can do some nice HOO images.

especially if you have to deal with light pollution, the option for narrowband is a must. but i guess if you have decent skies, OSC will provide just as good of an image given enough exposures.
