NJP Mount - Backlash & Gear Meshing

The Takahashi NJP has open gear wheels (motor & RA/DEC) and you can adjust for backlash between the gears by playing around with the meshing RA & DEC gears and their respective motor gears. Has anyone come across some tricks to get the optimum meshing of the gears without it being to tight to cause binding or to lose causing backlash. I read one trick by using cigarette paper between the gears to set the optimum clearance.
