I would also like to know. John had not responded, and was unlikely to,
and meanwhile the thread bubbled along harmlessly.

Best not to worry or ask..it is closed end of story..the mods head things off before they go downhill as a general rule...and maybe someone complained as I expect they probably do..but give the mods a break ... and David was very polite the way he closed it..lets move on.

Democracy has nothing to do with it...it has never been represented that IIS is a democracy.
Anyways as I said..the thread is closed...it wont be reopened so why bother adding to your grief.
So relax and find something else to write about.

Seems to me that the topic which was locked was fairly lame
and I consider it benign compared to other websites and forums.
People interested in astronomy are generally intelligent posters
and it showed with well balanced, cogent arguments.
I can only assume that it wasn't locked due to anything that was wrong
but just because as a controversial topic it could have got out of hand?
The only saving grace is that the topic is well discussed just about
everywhere else on the internet.

cheers

Lame or Tame?

Personally I think Mike and his Moderators grant a huge leeway when it comes to topics discussed on the 'General' Folder.

lame:
(of something intended to be entertaining) uninspiring and dull.

Allan,

Your position is reasonable, yes Astro persons are a little different, certainly it’s reasonable to say we’re a more thoughtful group than most.
Given the awful authoritarian abuses that are taking place…. Maybe there’s an argument that a sub-forum should be created so that we as generally thoughtful individuals can reflect and discuss what’s taking place.
These are extraordinary times and maybe we shouldn’t seek to impose “ordinary “ rules upon extraordinary events

Its working well so why change things...I know you are preoccupied with what you see as an issue that need more exposure but there are plenty of places to do that..this is after all an astronomy site and although I am the worst offender in posting non astronomy stuff I would not like to see a change that would simply provide a place to "grizzle" in effect.

And then where do you stop...heck if one were to make a list of all that is wrong with the world that would make the astronomy aspect a mere blink...

Further as I have suggested the key is not to focus on inequity as really nothing will change..we are dealing with humans that must tell you there is no point at all...you wont change the violence...look at the influence for it..Hollywood..if you are not violent and tuff you are regarded as nothing...look at how they present soldiers and police..if you want to take action direct your attention to the Hollywood culture... moreover dont let it eat away at you..that is where the real damage occurs.

As was mentioned previous, there are lots of forums you can discuss it elsewhere on the internet to your hearts content.
The original post was given a good run.
The moderators thought it was time to terminate it as it was heading towards a repetitive and possible unpleasant direction.
The TOS is clear.
I don't think "Sub Forums are the way to go.
Have your say in the "General Chat" which should be enough for any
General Chat, and when time is called except it with grace and get on to the next subject.
Cheers
