More Data on M17

I have added some more data to include 2.75 hours on each filter on an f5 200 newt. Here is HSO and HOO versions from APP. I still like the HOO version.

Unfortunately I tried a very slightly higher gain on some which created some odd snail trail artefacts at the edge of the dark dust.

Good work Ray

I like both versions.

Personally I always go over the top with saturation

Deconvolution can bring out more detail, but it can be difficult to not over do it and end up with artefacts.

Well done

Thanks Peter. I should give that a whirl.

I suspect to get the best result I need the patience and investment in PI to get the full luxury pool.

Nice work Ray. I’ve currently got just over 20hrs on this same target yet to process. I’ve been a little undecided which way to go with it because as your images show it can look good in both HOO and natural colour. Interestingly though I find most images of this object have it oriented 90deg from your framing but I have done the same as you and framed it vertically. Did you plan to frame it that way or was it just how your camera was mounted when you started ?

Cheers

Ryan

Nicely captured M17 with some good detail exposed
Like both options too
Same scope as me
Only one observation is I usually frame it a further 90degrees around as there’s more nebulosity on the rear end and tail , just rotate the camera ( unless you’ve cropped it that way or your sensor is square ??
Well done !!

Thanks Martin and Ryan. The framing was just how I started with the camera horizontal as I was just filling in between galaxies. The images are Hoo and Sho , no RGB natural colour.

After the first round I wished that I had rotated but was not that keen to start again. If I started again I would go to portrait mode. Easy to just swing the dovetail around, just hard to change horses mid stream.

I have run the whole thing through APP again and I think that has removed the snail trail artefacts.

Thanks Marc. Still needs a bit of work in processing. I think I have got rid of the snail trails and rejected the right frames from 275 down to 175. More worthwhile adding data now they are gone.
