Seriously however do not hesitate to run the genny..being so cold I would give them a go each morning...a couple of bucks against a grand..you just need to realise solar is not free..its a solution and not cheap really...anyways you are nearly there ...please keep the posts coming I get so excited following your progress...mine are playing tricks on me..I cut the fridge off in the van as I cant easily buy the food I want etc and now my worry is they seem to be holding too high a charge ... damn it I will connect to the grid..only $500k
Alex
Indeed Alex, the plan is to mostly run the generator during the day, as required, to boost the solar charging, not too keen on having a noisy generator running during the night...but I can if required too.

Posts will keep coming

I've been running off generators at night for years. The noise tends to fade away into background noise. I have reasonably quiet generators. Was using a Yamaha but got pretty cheap but sophisticated generators from Bunnings. A Chinese one that looks like a copy of a more expensive generator. 3.5kva and it cost something like $300!

My son and I got the form work done for the slab for the shed to house the 18" GOTO Dob and the path out to the observing spot. It will be a wheel in and wheel out approach.

Hopefully all the concrete for this and the main imagin scope support pillar, can be ordered this week or the coming weekend

Nicely setout Mike, now for the grey stuff hey. I’m tipping you’ll be the main wheelbarrow man leading from the front, hope you have some eager helpers during the pour ( or they all might be on holiday that day or got something else on hehehe)
It’s taking shape- well done.

Hate to rain on your parade but you will need way more pegs than what you have put in or its going to bow and slump

Thanks guys and yeah I do plan to add a few more stakes around the perimeter but I didn't have any left... but nicely picked up putting plastic underneath too.

Cheers Adam, Riley is very handy and a great partner for projects and odd jobs alike. Because I am recovering from a broken rib and have to be very careful and everything is harder and slower for me at the moment, he probably did the bulk of the work this time When I was competing in heavy events, back in the day, Riley, from about age 6 to 11 years old was my main training assistant when I was doing all my heavy lift strongman training, seriously, he was several years ahead in maturity, he was an excellent set up assistant, stop watch time keeper and motivator, often just the two of us down at the local oval with all my heavy implements. Now nearly 30, I'm not surprised he has become a highly regarded air traffic controller.

Mike

Big weekend at Eagleview! Maama Mia! a'concrete'ing its'a hard'a yakka mate!

I worked until midnight Thursday, yep under a full moon with head lamp ..was fun (kinda) to get the formwork for the slab ready and pillar prepped properly for an 8am Friday concrete delivery up the mountian. Pulled the rebar mesh out by myself (all one piece) all the while watching my rib layed down black plastic, installed taller mesh lifeters and constructed an isolation joint between the end of the slab path and the pad for the dob. Put all the rebar mesh back in and hammered 14 or 15 more formwork posts in.

In the end it came together...but it felt like one big mad rush from 7pm Thurs until 3pm Fri, bit of a blur really, trying to remember everything, lathered with sweat, body aching and sore from manually agitating the (too) thick concrete mix with a star picket to make sure it got everywhere in the pillar mould..up-down up-down, quick, shoulders screaming! at one stage it felt like a past strongman event, don't give up, don't give up, you have only one shot at this!...arrrg! Then the spreading and the skreeting of the slab! faaark, that's hard yakka! especially without really good tools, much respect for builders who coordinate and do all this palava on a daily or weekly basis!

Finished off fabricating a make shift kangaroo fence to stop creatures walking over the curing concrete through the night...the finished product, while far from a perfect slab, is a fine observing platform!

Next my builder will construct the 4.6mx4.6m deck around the top of the concrete pillar and I will erect the 3m X 1.9m X 2.15m colourbond shed on the slab, to house the 18" Dob.

Coming together slowly....

Mike

More photos of the concrete work, several wet downs were done to help with the concrete curing....and waking up this morning above the clouds, after a clear night, nice ending to the weekend.

it will be worth it.

Good on you Mike... working with an injury builds patience.
So good to come here and see someone turning their dreams and into reality.
