Venus UV/IR 01/09/2021

Here's my Venus shots. Learnt a lot about imaging over a hot roof. The roof always wins

First one is a bicolor so IR[red] UV/IR[green 50/50] UV[blue]

I got about 5000 frames in each stack. 90s for IR and 120s for UV.
Still not getting much details in IR but I suspect my focus is not 100%.
The UV being in the blues suffer a bit from the lower altitude and turbulences.

And here's an attempt at seeing some semblance of rotation with an animated GIF.

There's a lot of stuff moving but mostly noise and color mottling. So I have and ADC on order and will try again.

I suspect getting these two early morning rising from the east when the air is stable and cold might be a better strategy. But it takes some courage to get up that early and freeze one's balls. I'm not sure if I'm that committed yet.

Wow that’s really impressive! Love the bi-colour shot!!
Yeah I think mornings will yield much better results - even just after sunrise will be less dancing around I reckon

Thanks David. Yeah I'll have to work something out for the morning.

Congratulations Marc. I think you have done really well. Your planning and forward thinking suggests your next shots can be even better. Four thumbs up! One for each shot.

I doubt that.

Thanks Gerard. I must admit I'm having a lot of fun doing planetary lately. Something new to do. I'm starting to get aperture fever. I'm running this poor 8" scope to its limit. Probably past a little bit too.

Marc,
I’ve never seen an amateur shot of Venus and this is absolutely fantastic. Really like the colour and the classic half phase shot is a treat. Reminds me of my first Astro book as a kid in the 80’s. Venus is an intriguing planet- you’ve managed to bring it out for all to enjoy.
Well done!!
PS- I’m tipping you will get up early and put yourself through the pain and effort for an even better shot next.
Anth

Marc, inredible imagery, well done!
That's about as good as it gets, given the current phase and seeing conditions generally. She's approaching us though, so the next 8 months or so, right through inferior conjunction, will be interesting!

Thanks for the encouragements guys. A quick google search shows that this bloke in Poland did exactly that a while ago.

Getting out of a warm bed is a big ask.

Thanks for the heads up. I was wondering where it was headed. I have to look up Mercury as well as there is a good separation right now.

Phenomenal work Marc.

Which IR & UV filters did you use?
I've heard a good strategy is to image Venus during the day when it's higher in the sky but not sure if it still allows for this level of subtle detail.

Thanks Pete. I used the 2" Astronomik Pro Planet 742nm for IR and the 2" Baader "U filter" for UV.

Good idea about daylight imaging. I often wondered if the moon was ok to image during day time but never thought about Venus. I'll certainly give it some thought.

Really nicely done Marc - you got a lot of detail in UV - i didn't have as much luck - perhaps it was the camera i used or more likely i didn't get focus on.I have to go back over my data when i get more time.

Thanks Russ. I saw your shot. You still got some. I got lucky to get anything really. It was very faint, noisy and wobbly. Took me a while to find the right exposure and trying to increase the number of frames to stack. Here's my SER header:

thanks for the details - I will cross reference when i get the chance. Indeed it was more slippery than I anticipated
