Scam?

I'd like to alert fellow IIS members to what I think is a scam on this forum.
In March I answered an ad by a long term member and a member of the Victorian Astro Society. Being a teacher and with many posts I thought it was safe to buy from this person. After asking for the payment details I paid for the item at the end of March. My follow up emails remained unanswered and I found out that the item was withdrawn after I paid (beginning of April). I never the received the item or had my money returned. This is disappointing since I had many positive transactions and never any problems. If the seller changes his mind and withdraws the item it's ok but at least the seller should return the money in my opinion, otherwise it is theft and a criminal offense. Should I alert the moderators? What do others think?

Huey

Even if the buyer does none of that, it doesn't mean it's okay for the 'seller' to keep the money. It's breaking the contract of sale. This is what VCAT was invented for. But also, assuming you paid via paypal or Credit Card, you can start a dispute through their resolution channels.

Cheers

If you have a record of the transaction including emails and pm's then you have some recourse with your bank and VCAT

Dear Michael,

If it’s a long time member here, you should post their details openly in this thread. It might clear up any unknowing errors or protect others.

Cheers

Is that member still active? Maybe he was in a car accident or for some reasonable reason can not answer your emails...but if he has taken your money you deserve to receive the goods or have your cash returned.
There are usually two sides to a story it would be great if we could hear the other side.

Since the member is in Vic, who knows with all the COVID gaff going on down there.

If it is who I think it is, good luck, and may the Force be With You.

I did a search using withdrawn as a tag and by process of elimination I think I found who the person may be, checked their stats and they last visited early april
Was it an expensive item?

I suggest the person who started the thread...is that not entirely apparent?

No wonder the OP is disappointed. It is very sad.

Maybe they bought a new bike with proceeds?
...sorry bad form I know.

In all honesty, I’m all for posting these types of stories in their entirety to give both parties the opportunity for right of reply.
It allows the community’s to make an informed judgement on who they would do business with.
......it also shows any would be shonky seller/buyer they will be exposed if they do the wrong thing.

I don’t know who the suggested or implied member is, and don’t understand why we need to be detectives. If there is a genuine problem why not just come out with specific details. The Op has been very quiet.

Im puzzled why a long time member and regular poster would act in this manner. If I was alerting a scam, then I would…alert the scam!
