TIFF can be compressed, but not all TIFF reading programs can cope.
What platform are you using? Most of the image editors including Gimp and Photoshop will read a TIFF and save as JPG.

If you are happy with the command line the tools in ImageMagick will do it.

Grady,

A 120 MB TIFF file, if I'm not mistaken, will come down to about a 28 MB JPG in medium-high quality settings.

As Andrew mentioned, you can download The GIMP and it'll do it for you, for free.

I just used Paint (Windows 7) to open a 48MB tiff and saved it as a 1.5MB jpg.

The only problem is that Gimp will convert your tiff to 8 bit and then you convert to jpeg - either way you loose data. better to load a bmp 24 bit file in gimp and convert to jpeg - much better results.

Cinepaint, which is also free and an offshoot of gimp will let you work in 32 bit or 16 bit.

photoxx also free, but unsure of its availability for windows, works in 48 bit.

JPG are 24 bit too. At some point the TIFF gets down sampled. Just make sure it happens as late as possible.

Does photoxx mean some version of Paint Shop Photo X*, or something else that got buried in the links to torrents and keygens?

ImageMagick is available for Windoze and does TIFF -> JPG in one step.

I have yet to find a copy of cinepaint I can get to run on any of my boxes.
