Clavius, Tycho, Copernicus, Rima Hadley, Archimedes, Plato, Ptolemaeus, Moretus

We enjoyed some reasonable seeing in Brisbane last night before clouds sent me indoors for an early night.

Tak Mewlon 210 F11.5, TeleVue x2.0 Powermate, ASI 290 MM camera.

Each set was 10,000 Frames (SER) and Autostakkert!3 measured around 15% to reach 50% Quality in each SER File, so these are Stacks of 1,500 Frames.

Cheers

Dennis

Nice collection Dennis. Hadley and Plato's floor really stand out.

Thanks Marc. After my usual AS!3, Registax and PS CC post processing, I used Topaz Sharpen AI on a separate Layer Mask in PC CC and then blacked out all the surrounds and just brushed in Plato then reduced that Layer to 20% Opacity so it wasn't too crunchy.

Dennis, I am very impressed with you image of Ptolemaeus and particularly
Davy Catena (Crater Chain) in the crater Davy y.
According to Rukl's Moon Atlas it's about 50 kms long
It would be an interesting target for a 16" scope to try for.
Some good pics there as usual.
Cheers

Thanks Ron, the crater was under some quite flat lighting, well away from the terminator and I am pleased with how it scrubbed up.

You might need a neutral density filter for the 16" though!

Cheers

Hi Marc

This is the 1st time I have used this technique as I noticed that the data had more depth and resilience in certain parts of the image, so I thought I would target those areas with more intensive processing via Layer Masks.

If I applied this globally, I noticed that the "weaker" parts of the image degraded quite quickly and very noticeably.

Cheers

Dennis

Dennis this is a wonderful set of fine lunar images. You are to be congratulated on the great results that you have produced. I particularly like that crater chain.

I tried with the 20cm SCT tonight but clouds getting in the way.
Will put this down to observe next month.

An awesome set of images Dennis, especially like Plato and Archimedes with all the craterlets on the floor, great resolution .

Thank you Houghy, Gerard, Ron and Jeff for your comments, I appreciate them.

At times the seeing was tantalisingly good, where the 4 small craterlets in Plato were well defined on the Notebook screen, but the cloud front moving in spoiled the party.

Cheers

Then it's 20% You've always presented exceptional data as good as the conditions permit. Don't fall in line with the AI bandwagon.

Hi Dennis,
I'm pretty new to astro (and IIS), and have been looking at your "retrospective"; I have a Mewlon180C and am starting to think about imaging (its so nice just to look visually, so I haven't got there yet). I have my first astro cam (a Player One Neptune) coming my way (found on IIS), so looking forward to some fun/challenging times.

Thanks for showing what is possible with a Mewlon (I will be happy with a mere image).

I like Hadley too; on a good night, I can get fairly steady views but nothing like your image.

Cheers, Phil

Here is a comparison of the:
  • non-Topaz Sharpen AI (OOF) image and,
  • the results when applying the Out Of Focus (OOF) option on just the crater floor on a separate Layer, set to 20% Opacity.

Cheers

Great shots Dennis

I’ve found some of my better shots come from cloud dodging I’m sure there’s a reason why but meteorology beats me
