Spare Tyre Nebula

Nicknamed the Spare-tyre nebula, IC 5148 is a planetary nebula located around 1 degree west of Lambda Gruis in the constellation of Grus (The Crane). It was discovered by Australian amateur astronomer Walter Gale in 1894. Around 3000 light-years distant, it is expanding at a rate of 50 kilometres a second, one of the fastest of all planetary nebulae.
There are two little galaxies near the bottom orange star as well as other faint ones in the field.

Skywatcher 300PDS 12" F5 Newtonian, Svbony RGB filter set, ZWO ASI 183mm Pro, modified NEQ6 Pro, 389 x 30 seconds.

Larger field at Astrobin ---> https://astrob.in/hw2lrh/0/

Another great shot, of a cool target Kevin

There is a (fairly recently discovered) triple shell halo around it too, if you go deep in OIII

Interesting Do you have a link to the shell? I doubt I have the time this year. It's always raining. Edit, found one on Astrobin.

Thanks Andy. I think I have enough of the Helix. I might wander off the beaten path for a while.

Now you've got me wondering if I can pick it up. Be more of a struggle at F5.

Hi Kevin,

Inspired by your lovely image I thought I would have a go at it from my home. I've never imaged it before so thanks again for bringing it to my attention.

That's a beauty Richard! Yeah I find many of my images by what others shoot as well.

You've got a lot of detail out of that one. Distant memories of it being tiny and difficult.
