Iridium Flares - What ISO and f ratios.

A quick question on capturing Iridium flares.

What are your recommendations for ISO, f ratio and exposure times for flares about an hour after sunset? I'll be using a 28-90mm zoom on canon 300D

ps this evenings will be a mag -7 at 19:45:48 @ 26.6500°S, 152.8000°E

Hi Paul,
I did this one maybe a hour after sunset. I think it was a -7 mag one?
I know I used a 50mm lense at f/4.5 and 200 second exposures. But can`t remember if I used 400 or 800 iso?
I also stacked 5 frames after the flare to smooth things out in PS.

I piggybacked this one but another one I used a fixed tripod and it came out really nice..
Hope that helps
cheers Gary

Wow, Gary, what a ripper, Iridium +. Reminds me of an image of McNaught I took late on in its show when i had a meteor zip through beside it. Not as specky as that. 50mm 'eh. Might give it a go with that one then. It's certainly a better quality lens than my 28-90.

Do you still have the original images? Would the ISO be recorded in the Exif details? I don't know 'cos I've never looked at the Exif before.

What was your exposure length on the tripod one? did you get trailed stars?

I didn`t save the Exif details in the finished image but I should have the raws on the old pc as the old pc is now used for my autoguiding. Shall have a look later today.
Here is the fixed tripod image and as I remember it was a -6 mag and a 35mm lense at f/4.5. Iso 400 and 320 sec exposures. Took 3 images in quick succession and layered them in PS. This was a early morning shot.
I really like how this one came out.
cheers Gary

Looks great Gary, it really shows the transience of iridiums against the slow motion of the heavens.
