Sony P73 Cyber-shot

Has anyone tried using a Sony DSC-P73 for taking astro pix??

It's a 4.1 mega pixel camera, the lens is f=6-18mm 1:2.8-5.2, and it also has a nifty MpegmovieVX mode for capturing moving images.

If I can use it for some basic imaging, can someone recommend accessories and how to go about using it with my Skywatcher SW600 8 inch f5???

Any help is much appreciated.

It'll work, Matt.. I've got the Sony DSCP100, the same camera as yours just more mp.

The accessory Dave posted is the best bet for afocal work. Of course you can get a webcam if you've got a laptop, that'll give you the best images of our solar system objects.

Is your Skywatcher on an EQ mount or dob mount?

Thanks for getting in touch. Was worried I wasn't gonna get any more handy advice

My scope's on a Skywatcher EQ5 mount.

Do I just hold the camera lens up to the eyepiece??? I've tried doing that by hand to get pix of the moon, but the results have been a bit ordinary!

I have a little bit of manual control over the exposure,as you'd know. Which settings do you recommend and how do I get a clean clear image in the LCD screen?

PS ... ordered the Celestron NexImage CCD package today, just for a bit of try.

Cheers, ice

Have a read of my article, Astrophotography with a Dob.

While it's written for non-tracking scopes, it's got some info that you'll find useful too.

Matt , I cannot help you much here as I am pretty new to astronomy. However can you give me a run down on your SW600, as I was looking at one today and am thinking of buying it. Can you reply to my email address toomey@netlink.com.au

Thanks Darren
