Zoom Meeting 25th April 4am?

Just advised of this meeting....may be of interest to our spectroscopists:
To the Friends of the Greenway Talks Online:

The Greenway Talks Online continue at 11:00AM PT/2:00PM ET this coming Saturday, April 24 when Dr. John O'Meara, Chief Scientist at the W. M. Keck Observatory in Kamuela, Hawaii will give a presentation titled “Spectroscopy: How Astronomy Really Gets Done.”

In 1908, George Ellery Hale expressed his belief that the “spectroscope has established on a firm basis the new science of astrophysics,” a development, he argued, that was then “transforming [the observatory] from a simple observing station into a laboratory where the most diverse means are employed in the solution of cosmical problems.” And Hale’s opinion seems well justified given that data obtained using spectroscopic methods has been of fundamental importance to virtually every major discovery in astronomy and astrophysics for the last 120 years.

In this talk, Dr. O’Meara will examine the contributions made by spectroscopy during this period and show how the most powerful spectrometers are now revolutionizing our understanding of the Universe from the Big Bang to biosignatures.

The Zoom invitation to this meeting is below. I encourage you to share it with others who might be interested.

After receiving his Ph.D. in Physics from UC San Diego in 1997, Dr. O’Meara taught astronomy and physics for several years first at Penn State University in Scranton, Pennsylvania and then at St. Michael’s College in Colchester, Vermont. Now, in his role as chief scientist, he helps set science policy for the Keck Observatory and serves as the primary scientific liaison between the Observatory and its observing community and its funding agencies.

I hope everyone is well. Please join us for Dr. O'Meara’s talk next Saturday.

- Steve
