Should I go USB with A DMK21

HI all,

My trusty Fujitsu laptop has finally died after about 5 years. I've gone out and splashed out on a new macbook so now I'm completely mac in the office and laptop BUT have lost my firewire ports as a result.

I have a brand new DMK 21AS thats firewire still sitting in the box never been use so was wandering if its worth getting the Fujitsu fixed or try and sell this camera and go for a USB version of the same thing. Whats a fair asking price of my firewire camera factoring in "never been used".

Are guys getting 60 fps out of the USB version?

Any input appreciated.

Cheers
Mike

Hi Mike

I went from firewire to USB because of the convenience. Unless you have a 6-pin firewire port, you'll need a powered hub to power the firewire version.

I can get 60fps with my USB version no probs, but to solve the disk drive speed, I capture to an external harddrive and only get a very small fraction of dropped frames.

My thoughts, go the USB - especially if your new laptop doesn't have a 6-pin firewire port.

As for price - not sure. Brand new they're around $400 aren't they? So you'd have to start a bit less than that I guess.

Hi Mike,
Im not 100% upto date with the mac books but you should be able to get an ad on 1394 port (firewire) card similar to the side ad on cards for pc laptops.

Scott the problem with those for PC's (ie: the PCMCIA card) is that they don't supply power through their 6-pin port, so you'll still need a powered hub.

I used one with my DMK21AF04.

Not sure about Mac's.

Thanks for the response guys. Mike I'm thinking I might go the USB option. I have a mini firewire port on the old PC and my cable does have the external power jack. (cost me $50 for the cable, crazy). So I might flog the firewire camera off. I see the USB version is $600 at Bintel for the black and white camera which is what I have.

Scott i dont have a PCMCIA slot on the mac so not an option unfortunately.

Anyone interested, offers?

Cheers
Mike

Wow the drop in ozzie dollar must've pushed the prices up. Less than 12 months ago they were like $395.

What a bummer!
