One think I am trying to understand now that manually triggered Autofocusing is working great - now that I know focus decreases by 21 steps per degree temperature change - how to invoke temperature based focus compensation between manually triiggered AutoFocus runs.

I tried to invoke this with every degree temperature change - but haven't see focus shift on my Luminance filter which I use to auto focus on at the start of each nights imaging run.

Does temperature based focus compensation only get triggered when a plan is active?

Edit - I just found my likely culprit going through the manual - I leave Auto Focus Aid open all night - howvere the APT manual states "Note that temperature compensations will not be applied when Focusing Aid, Auto Focus Aid or Bahtinov Aid are open."

That caught me by surprise!

Ho ho ho! APT 4.40! Time for presents

There are Christmas presents under the tree APT 4.40 is here! SessionsCraft has everything one needs to sequence whole night imaging without scripts. The Object Browser got a big set of upgrades and now is a very powerful tool for targets planning combined with the Deep Sky Darkness Calculator. PlayerOne cameras are natively supported and more!

The full list of novelties is available here:
https://www.astrophotography.app/news

The User’s Guide is transforming to a true multimedia product thanks to the great video clips made by Mark Kelly on his Youtube channel "Southern Cross Amateur Astro". Don’t forget to subscribe!
https://www.youtube.com/@SCAmateurAstro

Was APT a good project during the past year? If you think so, you may give a present and make the coming 2024 easier for APT! One time donation, monthly donation, purchasing or key renewal will be of great help!

INDI Support

Hi Ivo,

Happy New Year. I was hoping that I could get back to using APT locally, but still cannot locate in the list whether APT has full compatibility with INDI Server.

I have a fully operational and low-cost INDO DIY Focuser that works better than I expected, but the last time I used APT it was not supported.

Which areas of APT do not support INDI Server operation?

This will be my last attempt to get APT as I now have a new INDI Seetup that is working error-free now (Key not to use Raspberry PI), but I like some of the APT features.

Hi Malcolm,

The INDI/INDIGO support is very extensive in APT. The main missing part is support for DSLRs, but we hope to fix that soon

If your focuser has an ASCOM driver you can skip the INDI

Unfortunately, it is INDI only and no one has attempted to port it across. I would like to myself, but have limited programming experience.

I also have a DSLR as well. I was hoping for a DSLR via INDI and remotely control everything remotely in my home to an external mini-computer with Linux and INDI running.

I will keep receiving posts and hopefully be able to decipher if INDI will work with DSLR and Focuser via INDI.

Cheers

APT 4.42 - Critical update for Win 10 users

If you are using APT on Windows 10, please apply APT 4.42 in order to avoid crashes. The latest Windows 10 update changed the list control behavior and is causing the usage of Stars, Custom/ToDo tabs in Object Browser, Check Lists and few other places to close APT.

We are using the released to add a few more new features.

The list of the fixes and the novelties is available here:

APT v.4.50 - Stability and new features

Microsoft has released another Windows 10 update (KB5035941) which is affecting APT. This time we took extra care to eliminate such problems in future. For Windows 10 users APT 4.50 is a critical update.

We also made many stability improvements that avoid many if not all random crashes. As usual there are new features. Some of them long awaited, others unique new ideas.

The list of the fixes and the novelties is available here:
https://www.astrophotography.app/news

This May is a very special month Sometime in May 2009, APT was used for the first time to take real astro images, so we will celebrate 15 years of APT gathering distant photons! The time flies when is spent in a good company! Great thanks to everyone for being part of the community and the project!

As you know the last two years are more difficult, but what is a celebration without presents So there will be a modest gift - on May 11th all active keys will get one extra month

Hi Ivo,

Any chance that in the future APT might be able to link to SharpCap Pro - to use its Smart Histogram function to calculate recommended exposure time and gain settings for ones camera, filters and OTA / sky conditions?

I am on a bit of a hunt to figure out the best allocation of time and gain per filter to allocate to my imaging targets - and I came across a youtube video showing how this program implements Dr Robin Glover's algorithm - so I thought I will give it a try with my gear after watching a few Youtube videos.

https://www.sharpcap.co.uk/sharpcap/...mart-histogram

Thought it might be a decent addition to the programs APT can already link to - if one is editing a plan for a target and one can measure their sky brighteness and per filter for your gear a program can tell you the best gain and exposure length for ones exact conditions - that would be a real bonus.

Worth a look maybe - it could be from APT's imaging plan set up one just punches out to SharpCap Pro to run the measurements then import the gain and duration settings per filter into your plan editor...

Excellent - thank you - there are many videos - the following was useful to me - shows how a cameras characteristics are modelled (which takes about 8 minutes) then the optimal exposure and gain settings are determined - by aiming a shot at a dark place in the sky and selecting Histogram -> Brain - selecting unity gain and then measure - which takes a few minutes and then you are done.
