Astrophotography with a point & shoot

Take a look at the second pic on this page:

Inevitably it's Orion, but the camera was just a tiny compact LX3:

The fainter stars are magnitude 8+. I'm waiting to see someone shoot Barnard's Loop with a compact straight out of the box, no special mods and no stacking.

I had a great time for a while there, taking astro pics with my little Canon S3IS.
The Afocal images of the moon turned out super sharp and clear, the planets came out ok using the movie mode to capture avi's, but the brighter DSO's were inevitably noisy, even though I stacked heaps of frames. NOt that I cared too much. I was having a ball trying.
