ASCOM issues and drivers solutions Orion

Ok after much to do with installing and configuring drivers for
Windows 8.1 64 bit
Windows 8.1 32 bit
Windows 7 32 bit (ignoring 64bit)

and trawling google from end of the world to other
especially to with 64 bit drivers in particular with Orion products

win 8.1 64bit
It all started with the starshoot 5mp, which has ezcap software, which is not good enough. I wanted to use other packages with it. Big brick wall !!\
So I resorted to ASCOM. I had already done the EQmod stuff. but not employed yet.

( PHD V2 worked perfectly with my SSAG ) win 8.1 64bit

I downloaded the ASCOM 6.1 platform and the ASCOMSSAG drivers etc

all went well till i tried SSAG with ASCOM and PHD V2 (brick wall )
did all the suggested things i found everywhere. Nup!

big long story in middle here not worth writing

I ended up borrowing a win7 32bit computer did all of above and shazzam all worked perfect.

Even had my SSAG working as normal camera under the SharpCap v2.5
oh it takes amazing pictures too. cant wait to try it out on live Telescope

It will work with any ASCOM enabled imaging software too
APT etc.................

I am real close to getting the 64 bit SSAG driver to work with ASCOM too.

The solution as it stands is in the System registry to sort it out
as the SSAG driver is 64bit enabled.

a bit of cut and splice I am sure will work, unless ORION actually just add the register the driver correctly in the wowsys64 system folder.

to be continued.............

i am busy ATM repairing at PCB level a SBIG STL11000 for someone else. It takes forever doing test images to see if repair is successful.

update

Win 8.1 64 bit installation

First don't plug in SSAG

Always run installers in Admin mode

1. Run the SSAGDRVFULL.exe
When it gets to location of install (delete the X86, it always defaults to this )
this was the main reason why the ASCOMSSAG driver did not work as the driver is 64bit enabled but defaults to installing as 32 bit on istallation, thats why when you try to connect it fails (refer to pic1)

2. Then run the SSAGPHD2.exe this will setup for PHD software.

If you use Maxim software run the SSAGSetup.exe, it will also do the PHD too

3. Then run the SSAGASCOMSetup.exe this the adds the SSAG driver to the Platform. (v6.1)

4. Then plug in SSAG USB.
goto device manager, open usb tree, if it is in unknown devices.
Right click, go to Update driver software update, choose update location on my computer.
Then browse to the Program Files directory, browse to the Orion directory, then the SSAG_Drivers_Win8
Click next. ( refer to pic2 )

This then should work with any ASCOM compatible imaging software

As in Pic3 APT i did include pics of Sharpcap etc, they worked!

I have tried with several other packages and all good

Extra bonus is that you can do Mono pics and AVI's with the SSAG too, plus several other choices for guiding with the SSAG.

Thanks elken, this saves me a lot of searching. I have just bought a new laptop with win 8.1 and I am in the process of re-installing all my astro software, including my SSAG software. I'll have a go at this install tomorrow and let you know how it goes.

Clear skies

I know this is a very old thread but, thankyou, thankyou, thankyou Elken...

I discovered this thread by sheer accident & the information contained has enabled me to get my Orion SSAG that I recently acquired to be recognised by Sharpcap... on Windows 10 no less....

Firecap still doesn't like it & when you try the ASCOM camera option it dummy spits and says that it is a 32 bit driver but, don't care.. Sharpcap works & that will do it for me...

Regards

Carlton

Clive,

I notice when I connect my Orion SSAG to Sharpcap there doesn't appear to be a native gain control for it in Sharpcap.

However, whilst fiddling around with it, I pressed a button called 'Show', this brought up an Ascom window with a slider control for gain.

I played with this, hit okay & that brought up an exception error.. hit okay & everything seemed to continue okay.. fiddled with the gain control within ASCOM window a few times & managed to get the picture (the camera is currently only sitting on my desk - constant rain) to go from black to white which indicated the gain control was working...

Was/Is this your experience? Is there a way to get control of gain from within Sharpcap or, does it have to be through the ASCOM window that appears when you hit the 'show' button?

Cheers

Carlton

I'm still very confused by all this. I'm trying to find how an Orion StarShoot 5MP (the colour version) will run reliably on my laptop. This is NOT the StarShoot Autoguider (SSAG) that's been discussed here.

My problem is that I don't have one to test! The closest I have is an Orion G3 mono, which I understand to be quite a different camera.

Has anyone got a 5MP to work with a 64 bit Win10 machine - preferably with ASCOM?

Bill
