Canon 400D - Colour Correction Check

I was looking at an old image of Orion and parts of a 400 second shot on a 9.25 SCT looked rather gray. I was wondering if there is a simple way to check colour temperature and colour balance on RGB layers? I pondered shots shouldn't look grey (I expected them to look light pink - mind you most of my shots when looked at in layers have masses of red).

Interestingly - I was reading up on the stark-labs site about Nebulosity, and in its manual it stated for colour correction - the amount of light under the histogram for each colour channel should be the same.

I wonder why - I'm still playing with my images in Photoshop CS2 trying to tweak them more!
