I have CCD and CMOS based caneras, and have to observe the fixed pattern noise in the CMOS to be downright annoying.

CCD’s are however far from dead. New EMCCD’s have close to 100% QE with ultra low read noise....unfortunately it’s the price that is keeping them out of amateur hands...for now at least .

Careful calibration and lots of dithering really helps with removing FPN thankfully.

You are right with EMCCD, both with them being amazing and 10x the cost of any comparable CCD/CMOS

I am looking forward to seeing more from the new FLI Kepler4040
