200mm v's 280mm - 1.4x Extender comparison

Hello all,
Received my Canon EF 1.4x extender from leon yesterday in as new condition (kudos leon).
I had one then sold it, then instantly regretted it - you know the score!!

I've attached a quick couple of moon snaps for comparison for anyone consideering a similar purchase to show the extended reach with the extender on a 200mm lens.
1st pic: 200mm, 2nd: 280mm
Cheers
Doug

Nice comparison... Nice shot too, actually! The Canon 2x Extender is also a decent bit of kit, and makes a much greater (well, 2x!) focal length difference.

On something like the 300mm L series it's superb. There are a couple of lenses that it won't AF on due to the 2 stops of light loss. I think there is only 1 stop of loss on the 1.4x.

Regards,
Rob

Sorry Doug, this is an invalid test.

You did not control all the variables – the clouds moved between frames!

I ran a similar test on the Canon 40mm F5.6 with the x1.4 and the x2 converters and when tripod mounted and using a remote release, both converters gave stunning results.

Cheers

A 2x on my 70-200mm f4L would turn it into a f8, but on a f2.8 lens - very nice

Bah, Humbug!!!
Is that the 400mm 5.6L? How do you find that for astro work?

Cheers all

Hi Doug

I’ve just found the old post and my apologies, it was only a test of the x2 (not x1.4 as well) with the 400mm F5.6L, versus up-sampling x2 in CS3.

Here is the link to the test image.

Here is the link to another star field test of the 400mm. It is a superb lens.

Cheers

Dennis

From what I've read Trevor, the 2x is a gamble on anything but the high end Canon lenses (300mm f2.8L for example) - sweet spot is the 1.4x extender.
But (there's always a "but" in astro-imaging), Photozone reviews states that IQ is degraded significantly in the 100-300mm f4 Sigma Zoom and 1.4x Extender combo - shame, as the 100-300mm Sigma zoom gets a 9.5/10 sans extender.

My Tokina 300mm F/2.8 with Kenko 2x converter worked, 600mm F/5.6 with AF working etc, although, AF was inconsistent, rather inaccurate at times, and the image quality suffered. aberrations started appearing with the converter etc...

The 70-200 L lens with the Canon 1.4x converter (that I bought off Doug, whom instantly regretted it, and bought another ) produces outstanding results.. image quality seems spot on, sharpness, AF reliability is still top notch...

Its a winning combination thats for sure.

Alex.
