Any widefield milkyway shots with Canon 5D/5D2 and these lenses?

I'm very interested to know if anyone has seen any widefield milkyway shots taken on a fixed tripod, Canon 5D/5D2 with a Canon 24mm f1.4 II lens or a 14mm f2.8 lens? No special technique just the camera mounted on the tripod with high iso set to 30seconds from a dark site. I would love to compare the quality of the shots taken with such a setup and compare it to mine (Canon 40D with Tamron 17-50mm 2.8).

I would assume that the full frame body would produce images with far less noise and with such wide field lenses and huge apertures they would be mini "light" buckets Thanks.

I can only provide a 30 second example of a 5D Mark II with a 50mm f/1.2L lens, if that helps (at all?)

Hi H,

I was looking more for widest angle to minimise star trails and see more milky way.

But I would still love to see your example of what can be achieved at f1.2 Would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Hi
After doing a lot of research I finally bought a Nikon 14-24 and adapter for the 5D mark II , none of canon lenses work well wide open and even the Ziess 21mm has its problems with vignetting .
So here are my first shots at ISO 6400 auto dark but no processing .
Taken at 12mm ( 25 sec ) 18mm ( 15 sec ) and 24mm ( 15sec ) all at 2.8 .

Thanks
Zane

Beautiful photos Zane thank you for those I'm surprised at how much detail is captured with shutter speed of 15 seconds and barely any noise at ISO 6400!

How do you find the Nikon 14-24 on the 5d MKII?

Thanks
I had to keep the exposures short because the lens is so sharp that trailing shows up with longer exposures .
The 14-24 is a good match on the 5D quite a bulky lens but not as bulky as the 14mm plus the 24 1.4 that needs to be stopped down to 2.8 anyway.
Manual focus isn't a problem using the live view .
I should be able to reduce the noise further with some Photoshop shenanigans.

This was done with the 5D MK II with the f/2.8L, 16-35mm. At 16mm, I stuck to ISO1600 for 30 seconds.

I was thinking of doing the same, did you get the chipped adapter to give manual focus confirmation?

Hi
I bought the Novoflex which according to mainline never put chips into there adapters.
I don't think anyone else has an adapter for the Nikon G series that gives you aperture control , very well made adapter btw , infinity on the lens really is infinity making it easy to use for the nocturnal landscape stuff I've been doing.
I took some shots last night that I'll post soon , the results on the back of the camera look encouraging .

Thanks
Zane

Beautiful shot thank you for sharing I liked the darker one of the two better

astroboy: Been reading up on the Nikkor 14-24mm and its quite an amazing lens! It's unfortunate Canon doesn't have a lens with the same focal length and sharpness as it'll complement the 24-70mm and 70-200mm beautifully on the 5D.

Three really wonderful shots.
FYI: ISO6400 is fake in the 5DII you get the same results shooting at 3200 and the pushing it up 1 stop.
Stars are round, detail is wonderful, really fantastic ultra-wide milky way!

Mo,

If I'm not mistaken, there's a Canon 14-24mm in the works. : )

The Samyang 14mm F2.8 turned out to be really excellent beating the Canon 14mmL and some claim the Korean lens to be as good as the Nikon.

Tokina also has a 16-35 F2.8 announced for the end of 2010. Not as wide as 14 but... F2.8....

I surely hope so. It will need to be good to top the Nikon.

Thanks Luigi
Good tip about the ISO .
I saw one excellent review on the Samyang 14mm and other soso ones , one of the few lenses the got consistently good review was the Nikon 14-24 so I just gave up and bought one , seems crazy to put one on a Canon and loose a lot of functions but I'm pleased I did.
As for Canon bringing out there own , well I've been waiting over a year for a 24-70 2.8L IS and still no sign but lots of talk.

Thanks
Zane

Zane,

I have seen the patent application for that lens, so, it's in the works.
