Photoshop prices

Someone was asking about photoshop and having to pay 1500 for a licence.
I was in Harvey Norman's today and a copy that will do photos and curves and all the stuff we use is 140 dollars - so you don't have to buy the full box of tricks.

That's Photoshop Elements, it's a light version, but it should be able to do what you want, and so should The GIMP (free).

The full version of PS (which gives all the kewl layer effects) ranges from $1168 for the normal CS5 version and $1519 for CS5 Extended. If you want the box that'll be $1671 thanks!

This is a blatant rip off, as if you go to their website, its US$699 and US$999, and we still have to pay 2x the price even for a digital copy. There is no reason for this other than blatant greed.

Buying Photoshop is saying you don't mind being ripped off.

Oh, and if you still want to buy Photoshop Elements, buy a Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch instead. You'll get it PSE free with it. Harvey Norman sell them, and mine was $99. Besides, they're so kewl.

Photoshop Elements is nowhere near enough for what we do in astrophotography.

Hmm... Photoshop is one of the most complex pieces of desktop software in existence. Its incredible level of integration into other Adobe products within the Creative Suite adds to its own power, and you can't beat the suite in a professional environment. I know - I make my living from it and depend on it daily. It costs what it does because it is superbly capable and predictable in what it does.

GIMP is not a replacement for Photoshop - without the external GEGL libraries it still works in low-rent 8-bit colour - and even then it doesn't yet expolit the full capabilities of GEGL. It can't separate RGB images into CMYK colour space for printing without doing it de-constructively. There is still no (I believe) native 64-bit binary yet available for Windows. Its single document interface is still hopeless, opening transparencies (layers) all over the place - depending on the host OS. Lots of development required yet before it will compete shoulder to shoulder with Photoshop. If all you're doing is taking images from your camera and preparing them for web-display, then fine...unless you want to keep most of the colour.

I agree Fred. I use GIMP to make art for my games. It may not suit Chris, but not everyone is doing what Chris is doing to the level he is doing. It suits me just fine.

It certainly doesn't change the fact that Adobe is price gouging.

If you have school aged children buy the ed version. CS4 extended was about $500 from memory, not sure about CS5 though. You would have to be mad to pay $1500 for software that gets irregular use especially if you live on the east coast right now with all the rain.

Does anyone know if there is any problem buying on ebay from the US? Like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/Adobe-Photoshop-...#ht_3839wt_907
Photoshop on ebay in the US usually sells for less than $600 posted to OZ. Thats a big saving compared to aussie prices.

From what I read it shouldn't be a problem, but does anyone know for sure? I don't suppose there would be any import restrictions for software is there?

Cheers!

You would have to be out of your mind to buy Photoshop off eBay!

It's all counterfeit.

Nothing comes close to Photoshop. Nothing.

Also I remember reading somewhere that the new version of photoshop student version requires you to re-register every 2 years and prove you are still a student.... not sure if this is true though.

There is a difference between the "student" and "academic" versions.

I believe Student and Teacher Edition and academic edition are the same.
You can not use them for commercial purposes, only private use.
The actual software is the same as Adobe CS5 Photoshop Extended full version.
staticICE is the good place to check prices.
Don't forget if you find it cheaper then Officeworks, they will match it & give you another 5% off.
