The Case for a TOA130NFB

With the return of my dear TOA130NFB recently I have decided to try my hand at making a little case to keep it safe...

I contemplated another Pelican 1740 case but they are a bit too big so I ordered a bunch of stuff from VFM Group and the parcels arrived while I was visiting Ballaarat yesterday.

Now I need to work out how to cut the various bits and pieces to exact measurements.

The case will be 290mm x 290mm x 1000mm and lined with black 20mm LDPE planking.

Pictures to follows once I get started just in case anyone is interested in making one for themselves ( or wants to order one from me )

Just a point on the supplier, VFM Group at Banyo in Qld, I placed the order on Friday and the goods arrived Tuesday, very well packaged and at a bargain freight cost of just $13.65 for the whole lot (three large parcels including 2 @ 1200x1200 plywood sheets)

very interested!!

When I get my 130mm at the end of the year I was planning on making a custom case for it. Already got the (Birch) plywood ready for it (Birch ply is lovely!)

I've also got some Blackbutt plywood I had custom made for a different project and some walnut sitting about.

Very interested in seeing your project, please share pictures as you go along

Thanks Adam, yes I have a couple of saws but have been looking for an excuse to get a table saw like the DeWalt DWE7485-XE

I might end up making several matching cases for all my scopes This time I am going with the 'ScopeGuard' style cases using TitanAV and Penn Elcom hardware....

Ha, I looked at that saw. Ended up with their Thicknesser instead and hopefully will be allowed a SawStop in future

Today I managed to dodge the big "To Do" list my family have for my spare time and spent a few hours on the TOA Case:

My intended table saw purchase was vetoed to the Finance Dept....

SO it was out with the Bosch 185mm circular saw, a Straight Edge and some clamps..... followed by a lot of docking, drilling, clamping and riveting.....

The pictures will tell the story, though there are a couple more finishing touches to be done tomorrow........

The case is looking resplendent in Takahashi Blue

Great job Matt. You got a lot done in a few hours. Looks good enough to be buried in.

Professional job. That looks better than the commercial stuff
Is that blue pattern something else you glued on the black MDF? Also where do you get all those bits and pieces? Alu rails, corners/handles, wheel enclosures? Bunnings?

Looks solid!

Can you post some pics of the internals - how is the TOA cradled/restrained?

What is the all up weight of the case and scope - the TOA is not lightweight...

Nice work! That looks like a factory made professional job. Are you taking orders? I wouldn't mind one for CFF 105.

Greg.

Thanks guys, I'm pleased with the result and will be making matching ones for my other scopes as time allows. I still have to glue in the interior lining which is 20mm and 30mm LDPE expanded sheet shaped to cradle the scope.

The materials were sources from VFM Group.

The panel is 7mm plywood with black laminate bonded to inside and the blue hexapanel bonded to the outside. Everything is riveted with 4.8mm x12.7mm aluminium rivets with stainless washers on the inside for each rivet to clamp to.

220 rivets, 6 corners, 2 wheels, 2 handles, one 1220x1220 sheet of Hexapanel and a bunch of aluminium extrusions........ as well as '6 hours of elbow grease'

So you rivet through the plywood and use the washer on the inside to give it something to purchase on?

David,
That's correct, although with the number of rivets in the project I doubt that it would fall apart without the washers...

Adam,
I don't have a workshop as such so I have to work quickly as I set up in the carport and don't want to get run over when my wife gets home...

Lid handle fitted, lid stay straps installed, foam cut to size (still needs to be glued into place)......

This is not a lightweight case and with the heft of the TOA it is sure to give me some much needed exercise

Going to ride MTBs up to Mt Kosciuszko tomorrow for some rest and relaxation....
