My niecebegged me to open a Myspace account 12 years ago - it's 11 years since I used it.
Twitter and Farcebuck are not on my list of priorities - my name doesn't come up if you Google me.

I was encouraged to open a Facebook account by a friend when it was going viral about 4 years ago or so. She thought it was the best thing since sliced bread, I thought it was a waste of my time.

Some people actually think Facebook friends = real friends! That never fails to amuse me

Seriously, my brother only talks to people who are on facebook, the family lost contact with him a few years ago

I would say he is the nutter, 50 going on 17.

I have accounts with FB, Twitter and LinkedIn. They are personal pages and I never upload images of my family/kids onto them.
Being a GenXer means most of our friends are on those and that's their preferred method of contact/update.
My wife prefers snail mail and email, but she never (or very rarely) gets replies. She sent an email to a friend of ours in Qld a few months ago asking how her pregnancy is progressing, but didn't get a reply. A few days ago, I saw photos of their son on FB
So now she is seriously thinking about a FB account, just to keep track of what our friends are doing...

LOL
Much the same way that a pen friend isn't a "real" friend? Or the friends made in the IIS community yet haven't met in person aren't "real" friends?

While it is true that the majority of the "friends" one has on FB couldn't even be classified as passing acquaintances, through shared experiences and common interests inevitably you become closer to some people you meet online. What you are saying is insulting to those who have made true online friendships through the medium.

I suppose it can be read more than one way, but he might have beem referring to "friending" someone in order to increase the number, as if that were a symbol of status, even though there is little interaction between the "friends". I'm not on Facebook, but I have heard that the practice is common amongst some people.

Fancy talking about your "big" brother like that. I wondered why I never hear from him. I thought it was because he owes me 150G.

I guess I was being deliberately obtuse. Bad manners on my part. I'm sorry.
And I guess it could be seen as that too. ie collecting friends for the sake of it.
Again, it all depends on your motives. I'm a self professed FB tart. If someone asks to "friend" me, and they're into science and astronomy, no problems. I'm all for the online geek fest. There are so many interesting people who want to share their passion of science. It's a cornucopia of knowledge being shared and I'm feasting.

And cats....there's always lots of cute photos of cats too. It's worth it just for that alone.

Can I just say that 3 pages of comments here and now a poll about FB - this behaviour, and indeed the general chat section of IIS, is a helluva lot like FB anyway?! You guys are all complaining about it, yet pretty much exhibiting the same sort of activity as the average FB user, at least the ones I know and interact with.

So... none of you are psychpaths. Rest easy.
