I don't mean to hijack the thread but Susy's comment made me think of a conversation I just had. I was talking to a student who is in her early 20's about some equipment we could use and said "Oh well, money money money..." and she replied "Must be funny in a rich man's word." I asked how she even knew that line, given that Abba could almost be her grandparents (certainly parents). It turns out that Abba are one of her favourite bands and she finds nothing odd about that, especially as all modern music is 'crap'.

Similarly, I was walking through the foyer the other day and some young blokes were sitting around and one was playing music on his laptop - Ziggy and the Spiders. You still see lots of young blokes sporting Led Zep of Black Sabbath T shirts. Yet in the 70's no one of my generation was listening to Benny Goodman or Glen Miller. It's probably due to the availability of music and the fact that these kids grew up listening to their parents music whereas in my day record players and old records just weren't around. I find it nice but still a bit strange.

I was thinking the same thing just the other day myself and this was much the impetus for me posting this thread

my daughter 22 was playing Bob Marley "No woman, No cry" she was born 1989 and I listen to Marley rarely , he died in 1981

I think this generation appreciate the depth and diversity of music from the 70's as we do

Gotta agree with the last two posts..........my 29yr old son was telling me that he and his lady had been listening to The Shadows "FBI" which she'd found online.............my response was to the effect that I was playing that and other Shadows stuff in my first High School bands back in the '60's.

They have to listen to something and it might as well be the 70s because todays music is crap.

Cheers Kev.

Hi David,
My daughter is 21yrs and she says exactly the same thing. She listens to Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Frank Sinatra. Bing Crosby, Dean Martin (for her age, go figure, she has oodles of those cd's, I am not responsible), Etta James, Santana etc. Even though I've often played Harry Connick Jnr, I think it was more Michael Bubble who introduced her to jazz, and Beyonce did the same in her film based on Etta James life. Her boyfriend, the same. She said to me one day, I will show you how *$#% the music is at the moment and turned on Foxtel to play current hits- sure enough, back to back dance music, with that electronic voice sound - it all sounded the same. Prob. why I haven't gotten much new music myself lately either.
I think many children today are looking for music with a bit of substance, and thank goodness artists come along (such as Bubble & Beyonce as Etta James) to bring back some classic music culture to the young generation.

I don't know how, but I think most children around 20yrs will know many Abba Songs. They just seem to always be there in the background and get a resurgence from time to times with films like Muriel's Wedding, Priscilla Queen of the Dessert etc. I am a huge Abba fan and still have nearly all my memorabilia (minus my cushion and socks- don't know what happened to those.) Every so many years, I go through and fold out very carefully my mega abba posters just to see them again and make me smile. You used to be able to buy these books, which was actually a poster that folds out- on the back was lots of pics and on the front a huge print.

My daughter and her boyfriend wear their Jimmy Hendrix t-shirts with pride.

Think of any 70's track or artist then search for it on Youtube and read the comments. You'll find that appreciation from the youngsters of today is not at all unusual.

My brother was born in 1993. Got him into Led Zeppelin at age 6. He now plays their music on guitar.

Good music existed back then. But, even now, in the alternative music world, there is some pretty phenomenal stuff being written and released. If it was popular, it would stand the test of time, too.

No-one I know listens to the stuff I do, and, it gets frustrating not being able to talk to people who are into the same stuff as yourself. Which is why I try and post links to obscure stuff whenever I can when a music thread pops up, to see if I can open people's minds a little bit.

1. She (Didn't Even Remember My Name) - Osmosis*
2. Waterloo - ABBA
3. Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac
4. Most People I Know - Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs Live at Sunbury 1972 (I live walking distance from the original Pop Festival site. The concrete slabs from the toilet blocks laid in '75 are still there)
5. Escape (The Piņa Colada Song) - Rupert Holmes (great to see computer programmers getting into the music industry)
6. Get Used To It - Roger Voudouris
7. Baby It's You - Promises (for obvious reasons)
8. You're Moving Out Today - Carole Bayer Sager

*Regarding Osmosis, you'll know the song when you hear it. It's of the hardest songs to obtain these days - totally obscure but very memorable. They were a group of South African session musos. Interesting that the song was a big hit in Australia and appeared on many of those K-Tel compilations.

Suzy, I'm not quite as a fan as you with ABBA when it comes to all the memorabilia but certainly with the music itself. Two important points: lyrics and the musical geniuses that are Benny and Bjorn, and the incredible harmonies of Agnetha and Anni-frid. That Eurovision 1974 performance is just wonderful. When you get artists like Bono and Eric Clapton publicly acknowledging their brilliance, that says something. And I'm sorry I have to say it... Agnetha...grrrrrrrrrrr I think every boy at school was besotted by her.

Osmosis... oh my gosh I had completely forgotten that song but when you mentioned it, it's now playing away in my head , great song! Must you tube it, tks for the link.

Stephen...
I'm guessing that grrrrrr covers her famous butt.
You tiger you. I was always the Frida because of the obvious dark hair and my best friend was Anna with her loooong blonde hair. Hair brushes for mics and a big mirror were a necessity when it came to performing Abba. Have to get those side turns right you know. Yes that what's young girls did for fun.

I'm going to throw in two more songs which are great loves of mine..

Save your kisses for me (Brotherhood of Man)

Suzy, grrrr indeed. Actually I was Bjorn of the group in primary school and that's all I'm speaking of it (suffice to say Fernando copped a real belting from the four of us).

I have over 5000 songs in my iTunes and I have nearly everyone of them listed in this thread! And I link them to a You Tube clip. What an decade! Watch out every Summer on Rage as they play repeats of Countdown. Often 4-5 episodes every Saturday Night.

- Yup, Brotherhood of Man
- January - Pilot
- Anything by Axiom, Brian Cadd
- Ginger Man - Brian Cadd
- Little Ray of Sunshine - Axiom (as if that doesn't become the favorite Daddy/daughter song!)
- Anything by 10cc, Leo Sayer

- I'll Be Gone - Spectrum -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9LGIbXpeGE
- Deep Water - Richard Clapton -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmH2BeDeuLc
- Yesterday's Hero - JPY -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siqrn...eature=related
- Fantasy - Earth, Wind & Fire
- Isn't It Time - The Babys -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOl2wp__yfc
- Afternoon Delight - Starland Vocal Band (Remember the confectionery this song used to promote on the commercial ???) -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NUkhMq_iRo
- Goosebumps and He's My Number One - Christie Allen (RIP) -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcsq4ty4x2o, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYV5KgZC7-w

Thank goodness the OP titled this thread "Your Best Five Songs From The 70's"............it's all terribly personal and subjective and there's just too damned many great songs, albums and artists...........The Band (admittedly they surfaced in the late 60's), Elton John, Poco, The Eagles as well as most of the aforementioned artists.......any number of songs from them could easily make it onto a "preference/favourite" list. Unfortunately, too many are suffering from being transfered/remastered to digital

You're right Chris. It's very personal and subjective, my long time opinion on music is that even though I may not necessarily like a particular genre, song or artist, I appreciate other people's tastes. I'm sure you'd share the same attitude. In fact I reckon threads about music here on IIS get some of the most replies! Music is a great topic to bring people together, whatever you're tastes!

And the OP Was really inviting trouble by asking for 5
As Marcia Hines once sang.... Music is my life... my life is music...
