Watch that Sam Neil space documentary... guaranteed to put anyone to sleep. Even if you've had 20 cups of coffee and wired, this will having you snoring in lalala land. True.

Camomile tea is good!

I hope you are able to get some good sleep soon, Carl.

I'm another one that has suffered insomnia all their life.

Sometimes I can't sleep for several days in a row. I hate it.
Doctors haven't been any help.
I went onto PassionFlower Tea at night.
This stuff is meant to knock a Moose out for a whole night! But it never did anything for me.

I refuse to accept sleeping pills. I just live with insomnia coz I'm so used to it. But it makes me awful tired at times.
Great for Astronomy though

Carl, I feel for you mate. Sleepless night are the pitts.
I hope you get some sleep soon.

There is generaly one of two reasons why I get a bad nights sleep.

1. I have to get up earlier than normal for some reason and I lie awake worrying about it and wondering what the time is.

2. Related to 1. Stress. Eliminate the source of stress and normal sleep parterns return.

Hope you get it sorted out quickly.

I suffer from Tinnitus, ear ringing, badly. Guaranteed to keep you awake at night because in the absence of other stimuli the sound is 'magnified'. My best friend is my little iPod. I have several music albums on there that have no loud surprises in them and a couple of playlists that run for over an hour plus a white noise with 4 hours runtime. Created that on Audacity software, 10 minute bites patched together.
Use small In-Ear plugs which last about 3 -4 months before they need replacing due to wire damage etc and go to sleep to quiet music. Lets my mind drift off without fixating on the problem.
The other 'fix' is to go into 3D design mode in my head on telescope/astro/car/computer bits. Last night was the spider design for the new Skeletope II, put me to sleep in about 20 minutes AND figured out few parameters to allow for.

I've had the tinnitus slowly building for about 30 years. About the only drug that works (for me) is a couple of Nurofen before bed which seems to calm the nerves slightly and lets me get that first shuteye.
But I quite often have long periods awake at night.
I think part of the necessary attitude to get through it is to see them as opportunities to think about things constructively. Don't think 'I can't sleep', that just becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. Hence I 'work' on totally positive projects in my mind..
I still only get from 4 -5 hours sleep most nights, anything more is luxury, anything less is hell.
You all have my sympathies to anyone who suffers with it in any form. The iPod is a good solution IMHO, a quiet distraction. just pick your albums carefully. Currently I'm on Afrocelts, Salmonella Dub and Massive Attack. They sound all wrong but the sound levels they maintain and the beat works for me. Just keep the volume down,

One friendly advice,
ask yourself WHERE are you sleeping (or try to sleep)?
Then a little bit of search, why you should try to move your bed ( or house, if it's under transmission lines, which is common in Australia).
Forget "medicine" and counting sheeps.
Cheers all.

The quote Curved Air: 'Don't go to a doctor he'll just give you pills.'

My few hints are:
- wind down properly before going to bed. Don't go from solving astrophysics to bed. When I'm having problems I shut down the house, and myself in stages. Computer off, most lights off, music off, walk outside and contemplate the stars/clouds ... Sometime I just sit on the lounge in the dark for a while.

- decide to enjoy the time lying there. Think about something pleasant, todays APOD, birds in the garden, plan your next holiday .. whatever rocks your boat.

- if you start getting angry, get up and distract yourself. Early morning TV has an abundance of mindless distractions.

- yoghurt is the magic sleeping pill. There is something in yoghurt that helps sleep and I'm apparently pretty susceptable to it. Eating at that time of night isn't good for the waist but life is full of compromises.

- a bit of light exercise a couple of hours before bed is supposed to be good too, but I've never been that desperate.

Brent, like most middle-aged people I also have a bit of tinnitus. Ten years ago, around the time of my nervous breakdown it used to scream. I used to lie on the bed breathing slowly and deeply and tell myself with every exhale that it was a bit quieter and that helped a bit. I'm in a much better state of mind now and it has retreated into the background. I know there is a physical cause but don't underestimate the psychological.

David, mine has slowly escalated over about 30 years, not even sure why. Funny how I can go all day and although it is there if I keep busy and occupied it doesn't bother me too much but in the quiet of night it seems to be so much louder. Hence the iPod. Mine is way above the 'ignore it' stage unfortunately. My middle age was a few years ago now, retirement is just around the corner. Been to acoustic specialists etc other than a head transplant there does not seem to be many options. Stay fit and healthy and busy seems the only path. Can make for a few ***** days and nights sometimes though.

I sometimes wonder about some members choice of avatar.

Why is it so?

I will start a thread regarding choice and meaning of one's avatar.

Well as you suffer from insomnia the expression on the good professor's face in your avatar seems very appropriate.

Oh, sorry Carl and all you other sufferers, at least some nights you can make use of it to enjoy the night sky.

Heya Carl,
I've not had it as bad as you ( or other members here) but the occasional sleepless nights ( and days - I do grave yard shifts as well) piss me off too.
I only have two ideas that I use.
1: As mentioned before, if something is bothering me, I try to think of something else....a problem, a design for whatever, how I will get past the badies in some game, number calculation etc. Just not something worrying like money matters, arguments with staff etc etc.
2: listen to white noise on my iphone ( its an app).

Hope you get through it!
Bartman
